The solenoid is staying engaged to long. That can either be from holding the ignition key in the start position for too long when starting the engine or the solenoid is going bad. The solenoid has a plunger that is attached to it and the starter gear shaft. When you turn the key to the start position it completes the circuit sending power to the solenoid which pushes the shaft and gear into the flywheel. That action then sends power to the starter motor that then turns the engine over. You will need to replace the starter. You can get a rebuilt one from any auto parts store for $80 to $120. A new one from the dealer will cost you at least $180 or more. There is a core charge for your old starter. Just bring it to the store either before or after installation and they will wave the core charge.

Probably not your battery connections. Always worth a try though. But no need to remove them, just try and twist the connection on the battery terminal. If the wires aren't permanently affixed to the connector, (ie wires bolt to the connector, and connector bolts to the batter)try to move the wires leading into them. If any of the wires move or the connector twists then you need to tighten them. However it is most likely the solenoid in the starter that makes the gear pop out to connect with the fly wheel. If it isn't coming out all the way that's when you hear the gears not properly meshing and grinding against the fly wheel. Take out the starter and bring it with you to the parts store. Not only will Autozone, O'rielys and other big name stores be able to test it, but will ensure you get the correct part if you need a new one. There are also shops that can repair your old starter for a fraction of the cost of a new one, and can usually have it done in an hour or two.

Starter problems with my 91 chevy cavlier

There are shims that go between the starter and the block. If it grinds because it is too tight in the flywheel you need to add a shim.

You need to make sure the solenoid wire isn't making contact with the starter wire. Be sure you don't have the purple wire making contact with the red wire.

Did they read the code at advanced auto? If so what is the code(s) they gave you? I wouldn't go buy new stuff until you have an idea of why you have a check engine light.

04 cavalier makes grinding noise in front end turn the wheel to the right grinding gets worse turn the wheel to the left grinding stops. it sounds worse at 40mph and above. what would cause this?

3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.

Replacing the starter of chevy cavalier

1.The shims go between the starter body, and the engine block. These are installed to space the starter drive gear, away from the flywheel. They are only used if needed.

2.There is a gap that you need between the starter gear teeth, and the flywheel teeth. This gap should be about 3/32nd's of an inch, to 1/8th of an inch. With a flashlight, and a ruler, measure between the outside edge of the starter drive gear teeth, and the outside edge of the flywheel teeth.

Too close, when starting the vehicle it sounds very metallic, and like you're grinding corn.
Too far away, and the teeth don't engage properly, and you'll KNOW it! Sounds like a metallic 'zing', as the teeth skip. (Also it won't be long, and you'll be replacing the starter drive, and the flywheel!)

Sounds like the bendix is stuck in the starter. When this happens, the starter energizes and turns, but the gear does not kick out to make contact with the flywheel. Have someone tap on the starter while cranking the engine.
