I changed the serpentine belt on my 99 ford escort zx2 now when I start it it idles low and then kills. I changed the crankshaft position sensor and it does the same thing. I took the crank shaft postion...

Rattling is most likely the original problem. I would say you have a bad bearing in one of your pulleys. Usually the A/C compressor one causes a loud rattle when it goes out, sometime the alternator one will also. Release tension on belt and try to wobble pulleys by hand to feel for slop in pulley bearings. If you find any significant slop, the pulley baering is most likely bad. (Your tesioner pulley itself can also be the culprit) sloppy pulley= bad bearing = drag= load on engine =bad idle and or kill motor.

Changed timing belt on my 99 ford escort zx2 car no

if you have a no spark scenario i would check your crank sensor located at the top left side of the harmonic balance pulley.the crankshaft (about 11'oclock) a 2 wire plug with a sensor on it check to see if it is damaged or unsecured. this sensor can cause no spark if not working correctly. This sensor is based of frequency not voltage testing is difficult, just make sure that there isnt too muck air gap. and that it is secured.Lastly may want to check timing possible that the belt has jumped some teeth and she has fallen out of timing. maybe a bad tensioner The coil will adapt i think up to 10 degree, ****** or advance. Good luck

How to replace a zx2 serpentine belt

Click on the following free direct Link. It has the correct Serpentine/Drive Belt Diagrams for your 1998 Ford Escort ZX2, 2.0L DOHC In-Line 4-Cylinder Engine.
The Link says 2000 for the Year, however this is the same as the 1998 Year Model.

http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/year/2000/make/ford/model/zx2/2000_ford_zx2_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm

"HOW TO":
Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s). (See Diagrams on Link)
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.

When it starts up it makes a squealing noise that is not comming from the belt but it stops or quiets down after it has warmed up

Replace the serpentine belt ,along with the idler pulley, while you are there check the belt tensioner.

1996 ford escort

Only thing to know really is when you're retensioning the new belt is adjust the tensioner so you have about an inch of movement on the longest run between pulleys. Any tighter and you put too much strain on the bearings any looser it will squeal. If it does squeal just tension it a little more til it stops. Might need tensioning again after a few miles because it will stretch a bit.

Serpentine belt replacement

go to gates.com and click on the Part Locator & Interchange link on the left, enter your vehicle information, look down and click the camera icon next to the serpintine belt, this is a diagram of how to route it. These engines have a tensioner pulley, it has a 3/8" square drive hole in it to release the tension on the belt, I start at the crankshaft and loop around leaving the tensioner for last, hope this helps, let me know
