if on and off consistently [short cycling ] the usual cause is low or short on freon others are low pressure sensor switch -or clutch failing but the usual problem is freon level
The ac compressor will cycle when in the defrost position. The system is designed this way, so that the freon will circulate at times in the system so the seals don't get hard or crack. Otherwise, you would have to replace the seals in your ac about once a year. If it is cycling too often then the freon may be liw and the system needs recharged. If your ac does not work and you are not going to repair the system. You can unplug the compressor so it won't come on and put a load on the engine.
Not necessarily you may have to test the freon pressure before charging. I would advise first to check the evaporator, the part of the AC under the dash. Sometimes it may just need cleaning. or it may also need replacement. IT may have gained holes.
this should be done by a certified A/C technician with the right tools, the system must be evacuated and then recharged with the correct amount of freon, doing anything less will cause problems. please rate my fix as i strive to be the best, nned more help get back to me
