A 98 still has a computer so with out power it will die my guess is corroded wires first use a multi meter and check for voltage on the terminal on the alternater it should show 13 to 14.5 volts D/C then check the battery see if it has 13 to 14 volts if yes it is charging if the altenater show 13 to 14 it is charging if the voltage is 11 to 12 or lower it is just reading the battery and you need a alternater if the aliternater is good and the battery is not charging it is either the power wire or ground you can use jumper cables to check jump from the post on the alternater to positive battery by its self if this fixes it it is the power wire if not unhook the positive and then connect the ground thermal to the engine block and see if that fixes it if not do both you will see the problem good luck
The car is having power drained somewhere. Check for an electrical short or some kind of "on" power source. Good Luck!!----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ECU Chip Tunning Tools
if wont jump battery has internal short and is bad replace with good battery get cheap ohm meter to test alternator out put. install battery ck voltage start engine ck voltage should rear 13-14 volts if not charging will read battery voltage with steady voltage drop. running with neg. cable unhooked can cause damage from voltage spike.
first you half to determine if the alternater is working. you do his by jumping the car and while its running take of the neg cable off to the car if it dies then you know the alternater is not working properly, if it stays running you know you have a electricalen short you half to trace down
sounds like alternater is not charging-however you should charge the battery and have it tested-if the battery is getting weak it can cause the alternater to over work causing a failure
If your battery has a short it will not jump unless you clip the ground cable to the engine or something iron or steel. Positive on the battery negative on engine. Always do this when jumping because the car giving the jump could ruin their computer.
sounds like your alternater is not fixed. Your car ran off of battery power till you drained it. Complete alternater repair and charge battery. You can check if your alternater works by starting car and disconnect positive cable if it stays running your alternate is fixed. Shut car off and replace positive cable.
Just to be sure. Check to make sure all connection on the battery are good. You should read 12.9V or somewhere around there. I would start by checking the clip on the left side of the battery where you have all your positive wires. And make sure that connection is good. Sometimes it gets weather and you no longer have a good enough connection for bigger power users like the starter to work. However the lights and radio still may work. If you still have a problem, check the starter. It may be bad. If the car is on and when you go to start it and all you hear is a clicking noise, then its the starter. Good Luck!
