I have a 1996 Chev Blazer and the ABS light on the dash goes on and off at times. Is this caused by wheel sensor? Also I live in British Columbia Canada and if this ABS light is on does this cause any problems to have it Air Cared?
The most common issue for this is a wheel sensor. Some models you have to replace the wheel bearing because the sensor is part of the wheel bearing. This may may also be one of the years that the sensor is attached and is part of the backing plate. I am not familiar with the term Air Cared. The most common issue for this is a wheel sensor. I had the brakes inspected and got the front pads replaced. However prior to and after the inspection and front pads replacement the abs light does come on and stays on for a minute or so than goes off, sometimes it does not come on at all. This really does not bother me at all since the brakes works well nor it was mention by the shop. I thought to ask this question because here in the Lower Mainland BC Canada older vehicle requires an air care inspection on older vehicles before you can get insurance. There is a fee to get it inspected, once pass its good for 2 years and my inspection is due at this time. Apparently the air care inspection is on emission. It does not appear the abs light has anything to do with emissions but further speaking with other blazer owners they said it will or it might and of course when asked this question at the air care facility they wouldn't answer but just get the inspection and see. So I am just baffled at this time. In future is it neccessary to replace this wheel sensor? Thanks in advance once again.Hi jsmes1027,

goeffreyh..thank you for responding and advice. As you mentioned to step hard on the brakes at 30kph and the wheel should lock up. Well not too long ago I was going speed limit at 100kmp on the highway and there was a chain reaction of cars braking fast ahead of me due to traffic congestion. I was about a car length following the car in front and in slit second I braked hard and skitted about half car length ahead then the brakes locked up(abs light came on for a long time) allowing me to shift left to avoid a rear end collision. Having this said I am assuming the abs is working fine. However in your opinion is having the abs light coming on and off during normal driving condition somthing to worry about and is it whell sensor or bearing? If the light continues to do this may need to take to a repair facility to check the ecm for codes stored with a scan tool. This will allow you to find out why the light is coming on.When the light does come on the ABS should be disabled and non functional. The brake system and ABS systems are two different systems as Geoffry stated. If the light continues to do this may need to take to a repair facility to check the ecm for codes stored with a scan tool. This will allow you to find out why the light is coming on.When the light does come on the ABS should be disabled and non functional. The brake system and ABS systems are two different systems as Geoffry stated.

The abs light will come on when you turn key on and go off after engine starts (3secs),it will also come on if you brake harder than required,to stop the wheels locking. If it comes on at other times it could be reservoir needs topping up or an abs fault(check it by standing on brake pedal at 30kph(wheels should not lock up until 3/5kph.)read antilock brakes or antiblocking brakes, 2 different systems.
the abs light will come on if you brake heavy, but only worry if it stays on,then it could be the wheel sensor. the abs light will come on if you brake heavy, but only worry if it stays on,then it could be the wheel sensor.

You have something disconnected somewhere after the dash was removed to replace the heater matrix ,the ABS computer is the only one which will reprogramme itself without any software but somewhere a multiplug is adrift iam sure
Take out the fuse. It is expensive to fix those things, most abs systems give out and most people ride out the life of the car with no abs, your brakes will still work , just won't have abs. Usually it is the rear that goes, if you notice something wrong with the brakes when the fuse is out, besides the dash light, then I would get them checked out. It is probably the dist valve thing in front of the power brake booster that goes bananas. I had the abs go out on three of my trucks all the same time, all different trucks, we got out the black tape on the dash to cover the lights, never had a problem, 2 of those trucks are dead and buried now but one is still on the road and the brakes still work great and the light is still on. Hope this helps.
with traction control set up cars abs and tranction control sensors are in the wheel bearings when a wheel bearing goes out grinding will come from front wheels and will ruin abs and traction control sensors causing the malfunction. Most likely by your description this will be it.
You can try unpluging the fuse under the hood for the ABS but your brake light and ABS light on the dash will come on.I'm in NH and it would fail the saftey inspection if either of thoughs lights were on during the inspection.See if this helps your problem but you most likely have a wheel sensor going bad in the ABS system.
That sounds strange about the power windows and the blower motor not working when the ABS light comes on. I happen to have a 99 Chevy blazer and I had the ABS light come on several times. There are ABS sensors on the two front wheel bearing hubs. If you take off the front wheels you will be able to see a black electrical cable that has 2 wires inside of it. This cable is coming directly from the ABS sensor on the wheel hub and is strapped to a bracket the is on the upper ball joint. From the hub it then goes to a plug connector that is under the protective flap that you lift to change your spark plugs. What I found that is a common problem is that wire tends to corrode or doesn't have enough slack in it when making turns and starts to pull and break. Examine that cable and if you see any breaks in it, that will cause the ABS light to come on. Also if you can get to the plug underneath the flap, unplug it and use a multimeter to see if you are getting any resistance on the two wires. If you aren't getting any resistance then your sensor is bad or you have a broken wire to the sensor. On my vehicle the ABS light kept on coming goin on and off intermitently and I found that wire from the sensor to the plug had a break in it. I stripped the wires back, spliced them together, soldered them and I used heat shrink tubing to cover the connections. The ABS light went out and it has been fine ever since. Hopefully this will solve your problem as well.
On each wheel, there is a sensor with some wires attached to it just behind the wheel assembly. Odds are one of the wires is worn out from the elements as they're all exposed.
Please don't just pull the bulb because a faulty abs system can cause serious injury
you may have damaged a ABS wheel sensors doing your brake job, check for a damaged or shorted lead to your wheel sensors... back side disc rotor, on spindle..
The ABS light is for panic stops. You have to have it put on a scan dino in order to find the right sensor that is not working or you could look at the sensor on the bcak side of the disc or drums and see if you see cracks in it. It might not be plugged in all the way since you had the axle replaced. Check all connection on back side of each brake. You would have to take it in to a dealer to find the sensor thats not working right they can pin point it.
A faulty VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or related wiring can cause both of your problems, trans and ABS. If the computer doesn't know the vehicle is moving, then it won't shift the trans. If the ABS controller sees wheel speed, but not vehicle speed, it will turn on the ABS light. The VSS is located in the rear transfer case housing. But remember, it may be the VSS, related wiring, a faulty speedo buffer (usually located in the dashboard), ECM, or even the reluctor on the transfer case output shaft. You may want to have a shop scan "data stream", or even have them diagnose the problem.
