So you are assuming the board is bad.....Jeep gauge clusters are notorious for problems at the plug behind the board. Sometimes you can get it working just by giving the dash a good whack with your hand right above the gauges.(not kidding) If that works, best thing to do is remove the cluster and spray contact cleaner on the pins and contacts.. In extreme cases you can slightly twist the pins very slightly to make them fit tighter. (last resort).
Hard to tell exactly from your short post, however, there may be a large retaining nut on the back of the lighter behind the dash panel. Or possible a large clip that retains it. I would check there first.
Hi Ed, I also have a Jeep YJ Wrangler and the design of the connector into the gauge housing isn't very good! If you take the plastic dash housing off the gauge area and then take the housing out of the metal dash you will see where the connector plugs in or in your case should be plugged in! It sounds like the connector has lost contact or has come out of the housing all together. It really is a simple process! There are phillips head screws on the top and bottom of the dash cover. Remove them and the cover will come off. There are small plastic tabs on the sides of it that help hold it tight, be careful not to break them off! Then there are more screws that hold the plastic housing into the metal dash. Remove them and you will be able to see behind the gauges. Remove the connector and then re-insert it back into the housing. Make sure it snaps in securely. At this point you can turn the key to the on (not the start!) position and see if the gauges activate. Re-assemble in the reverse order and you should be good!
There's a defect with them. I have a 1999 and the gauges and dash lights will go off and a "no bus" message will appear where the Odometer displays. If I push on both sides of the Dash they will come back. It seems to be a Ground Problem. I don't know how to fix it yet, however I was told for about $400.00 the Dash can be removed and the problem repaired by the Dealer.
