The first thing you can always do is check your fuses. there might a blown fuse that need replacement. The 1990 Legacy has a mechanical speedometer . The speed sensor is a read switch in the speedometer head itself. So if your speedometer is functioning ( needle working properly ) then the internal read switch is defective. That requires replacing the entire speedometer OR it can be a defective connection between the speedometer and the ECU.If the speedometer is not working, then you can have a defective speedometer, cable, speedometer cable adapter ( on the tranny ) or internal speedo gear in the tranny. Thanks. you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

If your speedometer is not working, it could be a problem with either the speed sensor or the connecting cable. In either of the cases, the parts require to be replaced.

SOURCE: speedometer and odometer has stoped working

Check on your transmission. The speedometer cable probably is bad or fell out.

SOURCE: 1995 Subaru Legacy. Speedometer stopped working

It's probably your speedo head, the gauge itself. I put several used ones in our car to no avail. When I finally went to the dealer they needed to know my cars serial numbers then sold me a gauge that matched my car. Sounds goofy but it worked! I didled with this problem for over a year on and off before that.

SOURCE: Speedometer stopped working.

The speed sensors will not fix it. This is something that these cars will do in hot weather. The instrument cluster need to be removed and the contacts from the printed circuit to the connector need to be cleaned. Over time they will lose contact and affect the fuel gauge or speedometer. You may have to replace the speedo cluster. Sometimes if you hit the dash just above the fuel gauge it will start working too. Been there done that, fixed mine as the printed circuit was coming apart at the harness connector.

SOURCE: 1990 volvo 740 speedometer quit working

There is a speed sensor on the rear diff cover that may me shot, however it is regulated by hertz so the dealer is the best place to see if the wires are okay. That sensor can be costly.

Change the speed sensor if you have the electronic speedometer. If you have a cable driven speedometer, buy a new cable, and replace.

First, take it to O’Reilly’s or an auto parts store near you to check the engine light. It seems suspicious that all of this happened at once. Then check the fuses. Please post what the engine light code is.

Speedometer works and stops working intermittently. I don't know how to unplug to clean the contacts

This vehicle 1990 does not have a digital speedometer correct.?
The cable runs from the output shaft of the transmission to the rear of the speedometer.
Therefore either the cable is defective ,speedometer itself or the gear it works off of in the transmission.
This could be fustrating especially if you determine its the gear on the outputshaft.( have to remove transmission from vehicle to repair it) Take the vehicle to transmission shop they do this in there
sleep.

Speedometer and Odometer quick working. How do I

Follow the speedometer cable from the firewall, down to the transmission. It should bolt in the transmission, remove the cable from the transmission, and turn the gear to check to see if speedometer is working, if not, it's most like the speedometer head unit.
