If it is the top belt it is ac . you can take it off .you will not have ac . the bottom belt is power steering and altenator , you be walking soon after it breaks.

What if the fan belt break while driving

Dan h described what would happen if your timing belt/chain broke.. fortunately the consiquences aren't as dire if your SERPENTINE belt snaps. Most vehicles have the following systems or devices powered by the front engine accessory drive belt (FEAD belt)
AC compressor
Power steering pump
Alternator
Fan (some vehicles do and some don't)
Water pump

All but one of these things can be lived without, at least for a short time. If your belt snaps and your water pump stops your engine will overheat in no time flat., say you're cruising through a rural area and your belt snaps a mile and a half away from the next town, your car will get you there, but you had better turn it off once you get into town. After a belt snaps you've got 2 miles before you absolutely need to shut your car down to avoid damage.

Aircon belt snapped, can i still drive my citi golf

It won't hurt the AC compressor. As long as the belt doesn't also drive the water pump or alternator, you should be fine without the AC belt.

I have a 2007 Chevy Impala which had a tension pulley that melted and snapped the serpentine belt. When I turn my AC it makes a loud squeal and also has the ability to power my car off after trying to...

I'm going to bet the a/c compressor locked up which put extra load on the tensioner which melted the pulley which snapped the belt. With the engine off the center part of the pulley should turn by hand as well as the part with the ribs that the belt rides in. If either one of those, I suspect the center part, is not turning than the compressor needs to be replaced.

Sounds like the ac compressor locked up and the belt snapped from rubbing on it. Once the belt snaps, the water pump stops and the engine overhears.

I have a 2006 Ford Taurus. Yesterday the serpentine belt broke and I replaced it. My car was looked at by two men who know a good deal about cars. They both said the reason the belt broke was because...

AC PULLEY AND BEARING CAN BE REPLACED.YOU WILL NEED AC COMPRESSOR TOOLS LIKE SEAL TOOL AND PULLEY BEARING TOOL THE AIR CONDITIONER SYSTEM HAS TO BE DISCHARGED TO FIX AC COMPRESSOR PULLEY AND BEARING. YOUR AC COMPRESSOR PULLEY HAS A NUT AND SNAP RING HOLD IT IN PLACE.GO TO DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THEY HAVE THE AC PULLEY NUT AND SNAP RING.SOME TIME YOU WILL HAVE TO BUY A NEW AC PULLEY BEARING AND SEAL TO GET A NEW NUT AND SNAP RING.AUTO ZONE HAS AC TOOL YOU CAN RENT TO FIX AC BUT YOU HAVE TO TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP AND GET AC SYSTEM DISCHARGED FIRST BEFORE YOU CAN WORK ON AC COMPRESSOR.

I have a 2001 Yukon XL 1500. I broke an AC belt. I had the belt replaced and the system recharged. It now makes a noise when you accelerate after start up. But that is the only time. AC blows cold...

Actually, you both could be right. It may be the bearing inside the compressor. The compressor does not make the cold air,it helps pressurize the system to get the freon from the evaporator to the condenser. The evaporator provides the cold air.If you can, open your hood and have someone start your car.Have them give it some gas and see if you can pinpoint the noise more accurately. If your compressor bearing causes it to seize up,you will probably only get a couple of miles before your belt snaps.Another slight possibility is the tensioner. It's pretty rare but stranger things have happened.I did have a compressor seizure years ago and snapped a belt though. If you can pinpoint the noise it would help to know.If you can't I would like a better description of the noise though.Good luck! How do I know if my condensor caused my serpintene belt to break

What causes you to think it would be a component of the belt assembly. Have you had the belt changed recently. Reason I ask is, if these belt get cracks across the ribs, they are more prone to snap during start up or acceleration. It could be anyone of your pulley's that caused it to break. Check the pulleys and see if any are locked down, usually the compressor bearings fall out and cause the compressor to lock down. The Alternator pulley,. I'm not answering you questions, just giving you suggestions on where else to look.

My ac compressor is squealing. is there a cheap solution to this, can i put a smaller belt on and by pass the compressor?

It could be the belt, but also be the bearings squealing, it will lock the compressor down and snap that belt. But you can bypass the compressor with a smaller belt.

A belt snapped, leaked antifreeze and no power steering

If it was the timing belt, the car would have quit right then and there.
It's the belt that drives the fan, water pump and power steering.
Probably what they call the serpintine belt.
