Its the exhaust gas recirculation valve, it may just need removed and cleaned or replaced. also check wires and hoses to valve.

I believe you mean the "EGR" valve. Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. It is an emissions control device. When the cylinder temperatures exceed 2500 degrees F the EGR valve will open to allow enough exhaust gas (which is inert) to cool the cylinder. This prevents the formation of NOX, which is a huge contributing factor to smog.
An EGR valve takes 5 - 15% of the exhaust the exits your car. You can have troubles with this part due to the carbon build up from all the exhaust passing through it causeing the valve to get stuck open or shut

2004 bug engine surging

The issue may be the EGR valve. Sometimes the valve can test out OK with a vacuum pump but can still cause issues with surging. Is this happening between a quarter and half throttle? The reason you wont notice it before it warms up is because the ECM doesnt activate the EGR valve when it is cold. One temporary test you could do is unplug the EGR valve and try and drive the car once it is warmed up. If this stops the surging this is the issue. One other issue could be your Fuel pressure regulator. Your fuel pressure could be low from this and it will cause your fuel injectors not to be able to vaporizefuel as much causing the bucking feeling. Keep me posted. If you found this solution helpful please rate it when you get a chance.

Engine check lite comes on Code 401 Changed EGR valve and EGR Lite comes back on drive about 5 miles

Sounds like to me you have a faulty EGR vacuum solenoid which regulates the vacuum pressure sent to the EGR valve.

that does not mean that the egr is bad maybe its solenoid a electric control or vacuum hose controlling the egr, or an exhaust pipe connect it to it. that code means that egr for some reason is not working the way have to work.

Check engine code reading ''Map Board Sensor, High Input'' and a second engine code ''EGR Sensor, High Input'' Light just came on. Vehicle is a 2005 Mercury Gran Marquis with 85,000 miles on 4.6L V-8. ...

means your egr is malfuctioning or needs to be cleaned. the high imput means the egr is allowing for exhast gases into the combustion chamber and the map code is caused by the egr as well.

p0404 is EGR valve. you can try freeing it up with B12, I did that to my 2000 Expedition and it has worked for over a year so far p0405 EGR position sensor input below the minimum acceptable voltage range (shorted low) Actions
  • Clean or replace the EGR
  • Replace the DPFE
  • Clean the throttle body
  • Clean the MAF - use electrical contact cleaner and be gentle

1999 taurus service engine lite just came on with 58,809 miles on it, what does that mean most of the time???

The service engine light could mean a lot of things. If your car is still running fine and you don't notice any problems it could be EGR system or the E VAP system, but above all it means you need to have it checked. Most auto parts stores will check them for free and give you the code number and the meaning. When you get that you should repost your question.
