How do I remove the rear brake rotor?

Removed the two locking screws, but still seems frozen in place.

Do now follow the advice on some sites that instruct you to use 8mm bolts. This is for front rotors only.

For the backs; remove the caliphers, engage the parking brake, remove the two phillips head rotor retaining screws from both rotors, and then release the parking brake. Rotor should turn freely. If the rotor doesn't come off with hand pressure (very unlikely), you will have to give it a sharp smack with a 3# hand sledge! Smack and wiggle until it comes off.

Make sure handbrake is off ,then if it turns but you cannot pull the drum off try slackening off teh handrake cable because a lot of quick service places never manually adjust the back brakes they just screw the handbrake cable up which is a cowboy job .if you still cannot get the drum off then its because the shoes have worn into the drum leaving a lip which means you cannot pull the drum off,only solution here is a puller which will destroy the brake linings on the shoes .

The Phillip screws hold the rotor in place...they must be removed! Sometimes they ar e difficult to remove...spray liquid wrench and let sit for an hour or so...use a ratchet Phillips drive with the correct size bit or you will ruin the Phillips heads.

Is there a certain way to change rear brake rotors. They seem to be frozen and will not come off. I did not see a set screw in the rotors like some of the new models have.


ok i have been doing the for 22 yrs..heres the prob...inside the rear brake rotors r ur parking brake shoes..there is either a rust lip the built up on the inside of the rotor causing the parking brake shoes to grab the rust lip when u try to remove the rotor..if this is the case u will also need to repalce the rear parking shoes and the parking brake shoe holddown spring kit since it will probably break when u have to pry the rotor off....or u maybe able to de adjust the rear shoes by the self adjuster...look on the back side of the other side of the brake rotor an u should see a over slot just below the control arm...if it there use a brake spoon or straight slot screw driver to de adjust the rear park shoes.move it up or down ..one way will tighten them the other way will loosen them...if ur rotor doesnt move at all take off the rear caliper an hit the back side of the brake rotor to knock it off

Replace brake pads on 2007 vw polo


Park the polo on level ground, turn the engine off and apply the parking brake. Pull the hood release handle and move to the front of the car.

Lift the hood and remove the master cylinder. Remove one-half of the brake fluid inside the reservoir with a syringe.

Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with a tire iron. Place the jack beneath the frame at the back of the Volkswagen and lift the back tires off the ground. Rest the rear axles of the Volkswagen on two jack stands. Remove the lug nuts and take the rear wheels off.

Reach behind the brake caliper to locate the caliper mounting pins. Remove the pins with a 12 mm socket and ratchet. Lift the caliper from the brake rotor and suspend it above the wheel assembly with a bungee cord or wire coat hanger.

Remove the rear brake pads from the slots in the caliper bridge. Inspect the caliper bridge and rotor for damage and significant wear. Replace the rotor if it is warped or badly scored. Scoring of the rotors can lead to break failure and will prematurely wear the new brake pads. Place new brake pads into the slots of the caliper bridge.

Attach the piston depression tool to the caliper. The tool will fit over the back side of the caliper and against the piston inside. Twist the tool's handle to force the piston into the side of the rear caliper. Remove the tool once the caliper piston is totally depressed within the caliper.

Replace the caliper onto the caliper bridge and screw in the caliber mounting pens by hand. Replace the rear wheel onto the wheel bolt and screw on the lug nuts.

Repeat the process for the other side of the rear of the polo. Lift the rear end of the vehicle with the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the rear tires to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

Return to the engine compartment. Remove the master cylinder cap and check the level of brake fluid. Place a funnel into the container and fill the reservoir with brake fluid as needed.

How to change break rotor on 1999ford windstar


Remove brake caliper and then the three torx screws from factory rotor. (most replacement rotors omit the screw holes). Rotor will then pull off. If it is frozen in place, a couple of strikes to the rotor edges with a RUBBER mallett will usually break it loose.

  1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the front wheels.
  2. Remove the caliper assembly; do not let the caliper assembly hang by the brake hose, instead support it with a piece of wire looped around the front spring or control arm.
  3. Remove the retaining screw from the brake rotor and remove the rotor from the hub.

An impact driver, No. 3 phillips screwdriver bit, and a hammer may be needed to remove the retaining screw. It is fairly easy to destroy the screw slots using an ordinary phillips screwdriver to remove the tightly driven screw (see photo).

  1. To install the disc, replace the disc on the hub, screw in the retaining screw and replace the caliper assembly.

How to replace the rear brake pads on a 1995 through 2001 Ford Explorer The system utilizes a drum-in-hat type rear brake rotor. The integral drum allows the use of a drum-and-shoe type parking brake system. All other components are similar to their front disc brake components Remove the two bolts on either side of the brake hose with the rubber boots. Do not remove the four bolts where the axle ties in. The two bolts to be removed require a 10mm socket/wrench. Loosen the pads from the caliper Rotor Removal In order to take the rotors off (replace with new or have them machined), it is best to loosen the emergency brake shoes. To do this, behind the rotors, in the back there is a rubber plug, remove that and you can use a screw driver to engage the teeth of the adjusting screw, turn it clockwise to loosen, usually 10-20 teeth. Usually this means turn it downward. After this, it may still be difficult to get the rotors off without tapping them. Use a rubber mallet and hit them from behind. Before really whacking the rotor, make sure you have loosened the adjusting screw enough. It may take heavy swings of the rubber hammer to do this. It will eventually break loose. Parking Brake You might want to check the parking brake while you are here. To remove:
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Remove the outboard return spring.
  • Remove the adjusting screw spring.
  • Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw and nut.
  • Remove the front brake shoe hold-down spring and pin.
  • Remove both parking brake shoes and the inboard return spring.
  • Check the parking brake lever for excessive wear and replace as necessary.
To install:
  • Position the front parking brake shoe to the backing plate and install the hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the rear parking brake shoe with the inboard return spring.
  • Position the brake shoe adjuster screw and nut on the shoes and install the rear shoe hold-down pin and spring.
  • Install the brake shoe adjuster spring.
  • Install the outboard return spring.
  • Adjust the parking brake shoes and install the rotor, caliper and wheel.
  • Lower the vehicle and tighten the wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
ADJUSTMENT
  • Measure the inside of the drum portion of the rear brake rotor
  • Remove the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Using Brake Adjustment Gauge D81L-1103-A or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the drum portion of the rear disc brake rotor.
  • Subtract 0.020 in. (0.508mm) from the first measurement, adjust the brake shoes to that size
  • Adjust the parking brake adjuster screw until the outside diameter of the parking brake shoes measures 0.020 in. (0.508mm) less than the drum measurement.
  • Install the rear disc brake rotor.
Reassembly Reassembly is easy. Put new or machined rotors back on by sliding them over the lugs (they should slide on easily.) Loosen bleeder valve (having a catch bottle handy is good). Push calipers in slowly (using a c-clamp or large channel lock pliers), close bleeder valve. Put on pads. Lubricate metal clips with small amount of anti-seize. Re-adjust the emergency brake by turning the opposite direction from loosening. Refill the brake master cylinder

Replace rear brake pads


Rear disc brake pads offer better performance and are not as affected by moisture like conventional brake shoe style brakes are. Rear disc brakes are similar to front disc brakes. The main difference is that rear disc brake systems must incorporate the emergency brake system. There are two methods widely used for the emergency brake with rear disc systems. The first system is a brake shoe inside the brake disc that is actuated by the emergency brake lever. The second is a screw style actuator inside the brake caliper. When activated the brake pads are forced into the brake disc and held tightly by the emergency brake lever.
READ COMPLETELY BEFORE STARTING
Step 1 - Identify Rear Disc Brake Components

Step 2 - Removing the Rear Brake Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_2.jpg To replace rear brake pads and rotors the rear brake caliper needs to be removed. First loosen the rear brake caliper mount bolts and remove them. Turn counter clockwise.
Step 3 - Lift Rear Brake Caliper from The Caliper Mount
rear_brake_pads_3.jpg After the caliper mount bolts have been removed, gently lift the brake caliper from the caliper mount. Inspect the caliper slides; they should move freely in the caliper mount. Remove rear brake pads and hardware.

Step 4 - Removing Caliper Mount Bolts
rear_brake_pads_4.jpg With a socket wrench or other appropriate removal tool, loosen the rear brake caliper mounting bolts. Remove bolts and lift the caliper mount and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole. Tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub holding on tightly, using both hands. You do not want to drop the rotor.

Step 5 - Removing Rear Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor.jpg Remove the retaining screw from the disc mounting hole, tap the rotor gently to release any rust that has accumulated between the rotor and bearing hub. Lift brake rotor from wheel hub, hold on using both hands and do not drop.

Step 6 - Install New Brake Rotor
rear_brake_rotor_2.jpg Check the new rotor against the old brake rotor to make sure they are the same size. Clean the mating surface on the wheel hub before the new brake rotor is installed. Reinstall rotor retainer screw.
Step 7 - Reset Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brakes_7.jpg Before new brake pads can be installed, the rear brake caliper must be reset. The reset tool winds the piston back into position so the new brake pads will fit. This style of brake caliper will not compress with a clamp tool; it can only be reset with the proper reset tool.
Step 8 - Reinstall Rear Caliper Mount and Install New Rear Brake Pads
rear_brake_rotor_3.jpg After the caliper has been reset, reinstall caliper mounting bolts and make sure the bolts are tight. Then match up the old brake pads to the new brake pads. They should be exactly the same except, of course; the old ones will be worn out. Check the new brake pads for proper fit and install any brake hardware that is required.
Step 9 - Remount Rear Brake Caliper
rear_brake_rotor_4.jpg Reinstall the brake caliper, align brake pad hardware and reinstall caliper mounting bolts. (Note: align the rear peg of the brake pad to the groove in the caliper piston.) Recheck and retighten all caliper and caliper mount bolts. Bleed brake system to relieve any air in the system. Before driving the vehicle, push the brake pedal down and let it up slowly. This operation forces the brake pads to travel to the brake rotors. DO NOT DRIVE VEHICLE until proper brake pedal operation resumes. When test driving vehicle listen for any unusual noises during the operation of the brakes.
WARNING! Always have the vehicle under inspection on level ground, in park with the emergency brake on. Always wear protective eyewear, gloves and necessary clothing before inspection or work begins. Never crank an engine over when anyone is near the battery or engine. Always have an operational fire extinguisher close by, obey all first aid instructions in the event of an injury. Never stand in front or behind a vehicle when cranked over or running. When engine is cranked over keep hands and clothing away from rotating components. Never move a car without proper brake pedal operation.

Slightly loosen tire lug nuts, raise car with jack, remove lug nuts and wheel, remove caliper bolts from brake calipers. Open cap on brake fluid reservoir, place folded towel over top of reservoir and set cap on the paper towel to hold it in place, use a large 9-inch C-clamp to squeez in on front brake pad about 1/8 inch. REmove caliper from rotor. Hang caliper from shock coils with strong bungie strap so there is no pressure on the brake line. Remove bolts from caliper plate and remove caliper plate. Using oversized phillips screwdriver end attached to a 3/8 inch flex wrench, you will carefully put light pressure in a counter-clockwise direction to remove the brass screws and tap the flex wrench at the same time with a large 3-pound hammer driving the screwdriver end into the top of the screw as you put more pressure on the wrench to loosen the screw. This is about the only way to remove brass screws without "damaging them" and they are a dealer item not found in parts store. There should be two screws holding the rotor on. Then spray liquid wrench or penetrating oil into all holes on rotor toward center to help dissolve rust. Wait three minutes then tap rear of rotor lightly with large hammer taking care NOT to hit the thin metal rotor shield. Eventually, this tapping force will loosen the rotor. Use same technique of tapping the flex wrench when applying pressure to wrench to tighten the brass screws when replacing the rotors.

I have a 2000 Passat and going to have my friend replace the rotors and breaks. I am preparing to fix it but want to know what sizes are the bolts for the calipers sliding pins. If you know the Bolt s


For a wrench or for the acctual bolt size.
To remove front pads..you need 8mm allen socket to pull the caliper guide pins, then 17 or 18mm..To remove rear pads...you need 13mm socket for lock bolt on guide pins and 15mm open end wrench (thin section to hold guide pin while you remove lock bolts..I ground down a spare wrench). You DO NOT have to remove rear carriers to change rotors..just remove lock screw and angle rotor out. The B5 Passats don't have the electronic parking brake so you don't need VAG Com to change pads.
Installation tips:
Clean and regrease the guide pins with "synthetic caliper grease"
Rear lock bolts come with preapplied thread locker and "are not to be reused"..I just wire brush the threads and use some Loctite Blue on em. I smear just a little antisieze on the inside bore of the rotors and on the lock screw threads to prevent corrosion and make next rotor change ez. Torques:
Front caliper guide pins:18 ft lb
Front carrier bolts: 89 ft lb
Rear guide pin lock bolts:26 ft lb
Wheel lugs: 89 ft lb

Replacing the rear rotors on a 2003 E320


So this is what it takes to replace rear brake rotors on a 2003 Mercedes E320;
1) open the bonnet (hood) of the car and loosen/remove the cap off of the brake fluid resevior.
2) remove outer spring clamp from brake assembly (it clips in to the iner edge of the holes of the caliper).
3)using a 7 MM allen wrench, remove the brake caliper.
4) using 18 MM box wrench, remove the caliper housing assembly off of the wheel hub.
5) using a star wrench, unscrew the rotor locking screw from the rotor
6) squirt some liquid wrench on the rotor hub and knock the rotor with a hammer to work the liquid wrench in.
7) using the same hammer, knock the rotor off the hub.
8) using a metal file, lightly file old residue off of the hub and place the new rotor on the hub.
9) set the hub by screwing in the lug nuts and then screw in the hub locking screw using the star wrench, then remove the lug nuts.
10) reinstall the caliper housing assembly onto the wheel hub using the 18 MM box wrench.
11) push back the brake claiper piston to its home position and install the inner brake pad (the one with the snap clips)
12) insert the outer brake pad in the claper housing assembly.
13) slide on the caliper housing with the inner brake pad in place (over the outer brake pad) and screw in the caliper screw rods using the 7 MM allen wrench
14) on the right wheel brakes, DO NOT FORGET to slide in the brake sensor (the one with the black connector) and connect it to the connector on the caliper housing.
15) be sure to reinsert the spring clamp onto the outer brake assembly to set the assembly squarely onto the wheel (there should be no wiggle in the brake assembly after the spring clamps are installed).
16) finally mount the wheels.
17) you can bleed the brakes at this point to release any trapped air (which is unlikely) but be sure to pump the brakes after starting the car BUT BEFORE MOVING IT to re-preassurize the brake system before driving the car.
17) ONE WEEK LATER - recheck brake assembly to ensure all is okay and brake fluid.

This proposed solution is for a 2003 Mercedes Benz E320 and NOT a 2005 model as stated by the limited option selection provided by FIXYA.com when initially describing the problem.
