Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Am SE
The valves that are furthest from the intake, on the outside perimeter of the head, closest to the spark plugs are small diameter valves. These valves use the short rods.
The valves that are [non-uniformly] on the interior of the head use the large diameter valves. These valves use the long push rods. This is not due to the diameter, but do to the proximity of the valve on the head with respect to the rod length required to push it.
So, looking at a picture of the "front head," closest to the front of the car, from underneath will verify that diameters are small - large - large - small - large - small. Inspecting from above you should note the order of valves as outside - interior - interior - outside - interior - outside.
And if you invert that same head to the "rear head" configuration (180o) it would become small - large - small - large - large - small (outside - interior - outside - interior - interior - outside).
The answer is this:
The rear head (2-4-6) will have push-rods in the following configuration:
short - long - short - long - long - short
The front head (1-3-5) will have push-rods in the following configuration:
short - long - long - short - long - short
