Need to hook up a VW scanner or equivalent so you can isolate where it's not functioning properly from the DTC (display trouble code) stored in it's memory.

There is a small vacuum pipe from the EGR solenoid that was disconnected, by reconnecting this pipe the problems (that I have had ever since I had a new head some 30,000 miles ago from a VW main dealer) have gone away.

This is a common occurance on vw's, you need to check for vacuum hose leaks, this is the cause.
Volkswagen engines rely heavily on vacuum and if there is one cut hose, or one small leak, your car will run like this.
If you can keep it running with the hood up, start listening for vacuum leaks around your hoses on both sides.
Most vacuum leaks occur near the front of the engine bay.

Coolant leankin in pump area

Using a small mirror (available at parts stores w/ a nice long handle, not expensive either) check to see if the leak is from a small 'weep' hole under the pump, at the center. If this is where the leak is, it is a sign that your water pump is on the way out, and should be replaced. This leak will get worse as time goes on, so keep an eye on the coolant level, as it may go down quickly. Let me know what u find.
