My 2001 dts cadillac is not gettin full power when driven its starts puttering as soon as the car warms.the check engine light is blinking on and off

Must find the cause of the problem by having the computer scanned for codes and getting their english descriptions using an OBD-II engine scanner.

One can get one through Sears or Walmart or the local auto parts store, or have an auto service center scan it for you.

Try this: Your fellow owners are having problems too!

Read the part about checking ground connections. The body and frame of the car is the "ground" . A lot of the connections are exposed to ? Road salt. Corrosion is probably the number one culprit with bad connections. If you have had any starting problems (very cold) I would start with the battery to ground connection to the frame. Trace ground wire from the Battery Negitive terminal to
the frame. There are a number of other ground connedtions I even had one from engine to frame that improved emmisions results. A very bright flash light in the dark make tracing easier. I like the new LED lights.

Some problems are intermittent. If the engine check light is now off (except momentarily when you turn on the ignition and start) and staying off, just drive on.

I have a 2006 Cadillac DTS my temperature gauge goes up and down but the car never overheats. When the needle is in the red the car putters but when the needle fall it rides smooth again

Actually, by your very description of the symptoms the car IS overheating. The temperature gauge should NEVER be "in the red" as this is too hot for the engine. The "puttering" you describe is the engine laboring to stay running in the overheated condition. This is shortening engine life dramatically. It sounds like you may have a thermostat that is not opening completely, or a cooling fan that is not operating correctly. If a fan problem it could be either the fan motor itself or the coolant temperature sensor that turns the fan on. It is imperative that you get this looked at IMMEDIATELY. The engine on your Cadillac has aluminum heads and they are easily warped or cracked by heat. A third problem you could have is a low coolant level. Never trust the sensors in the overflow bottles. If the coolant in the reservoir gets depleted, then the system develops air pockets which cause overheating and erratic gauge operation. If this is your problem, topping off the reservoir and purging the air in the system should clear things up. Be advised, however, you should also be on the lookout for system leaks if this occurs.

You are having a Battery Issue or a Charging Issue. When you crank the engine over, the Draw of POWER is shutting down the Instrument Cluster. Fix the Charging Problem and then see what you have...

The check engine light is blinking off and on; the engine is puttering when on and when you press the gas, there is not much power.

Sounds like you have a pretty bad running condition if the light is flashing. Best place to start would be a basic tuneup with plugs. When you pull off the ignition coils make sure they dont look burnt, they may need to be replaced if they are.
