Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

Open Question

Adjusting front end alignment . The tire is tipping in and they are wearing out excessively on inside edge. I believe the spacers on top of a frame support are adjusted wrong. do you need to release the pressure on front by jacking the vehicle up before trying to turn the spacers on the top bolts?

does the car make noise from the rear when you go at a high speed. If it does it may be your bearings. I had my bearing wear out on me at 15000 miles.

Front end work can be tricky and should be done by a certified mechanic,there are a number of possibilities here,if it is a "toe out" problem this could be caused by worn tie rod ends or control arm bushings but this may also be a camber problem however camber usually affects one wheel.Camber can be caused by a bent spindle, mislocated strut tower, bent strut, worn or collapsed control arm bushing, bent control arm or a weak or broken spring. If any of these parts are replaced, camber should be checked and adjusted as needed after the parts have been installed.I hope this helps you,good luck.

If you have run out of adjustment, perhaps you should consider replacing the bars. Essentially they are just a different kind of spring and over time they do loose tension. Obviously something is affecting your alignment or the tires would not wear!
What I fail to understand is that a shop can tell you it's not mis-aligned if the wheels have an obvious camber problem??!! Has anyone put it on an alignment machine?

problem is with over inflating the tires,causing middle tread wear,as long as you have more the 3/32 tread wear in the middle than you are ok.always set tire pressure when cold at around 33psi,check tire inflation sticker on dar jam for exact tire pressure

If you are confident the wheel alignment is correct (first option) it may have excessive positive camber (lean in or out of the front wheel). This is often adjusted at the top of the strut tower (if fitted). A good front end mechanic would fix this problem in his sleep, you would not have to prompt him.

Preventing tire wear is about regular maintainence to your vehicle.
You should rotate your tires every 5,000 miles , and keep
your tire pressure at factory pressures as indicated by the tag
inside the drivers door column.
Alignment is another factor in tire wear , look at your tires carefully .
Look for any unusual wear , especally on the inside of the tires,
as this is usually the most troublesome spot.
As vehicles age , the springs lose their tension to a degree.
This causes a problem in the tire angle called "camber".
The vehicles wheels are tilted inward at the top.
Excessive negative camber will wear the inside of the tire.
Most vehicles can have this corrected by properly aligning
the vehicle .
Another wear problem can be caused by the toe adjustment
being out of specifications .
This is the most destructive angle to tires , it the same angle you use to steer the vehicle left and right .
It normally causes inner and outer tire edges to wear rough in
one direction smooth in another while rubbing your hand around the
tire.
Both these angles can be corrected by a professional alignment .
Be sure the technician inspects your front end for any worn parts,
as aligning it with them is a waste of money and time .
Always ask for a before and after printout of your alignment.

E430 rear tyres scrubbing on iside shoulder approx 1 inch


I am not an Mercedes expert, but if your rear axle is not solid from one side to the other, you have one of a number of hinged floating rear axles. These may simply require an alignment, just as the front end requires.

With excess wear on the inside track of the tires, the inside of the tire is pitched down lower than the outside edge. Most rear tires are set to run level or slightly pitched to improve handling.

If your rear assembly is not adjustable, the connecting bushings are worn on the linked suspension or the rear axle bearings have excess clearance.

Go somewhere to have a 4 wheel alignment, not to be confused with 4 wheel drive.

Front tires wearing on inside very quickly on 1998 Mazda B2500


This may be due to the alignment being out of specification or possibly loose front end parts throwing your alignment out.

Both front tyres have excessive wear after only a few thousand miles on the insides. Appears to be similar rate of wear on each tyre. Tracking adjusted last service, so unlikely to be that. Any ideas?...


I think a real good place to start would be to have a front end alignment, and struts and springs checked. Most alignment places will check front end all over before performing the alignment, to insure that it isn't worn parts causing the problem, as well as insuring that you aren't driving under dangerous conditions. Your problem could be as simple as a camber adjustment to correct negative camber.( tire is leaning inward at top, which causes tire at road surface to run on inside of tread.) Weak struts and springs are also a consideration, especially if still original on a 95' vehicle.

I just got my hands on a 95 Pathfinder. The front tires have a lot of wear on the inside edges. I was told by seller that this is caused by driving on pavement in 4WD. As this is my first 4x4, I wasn't...


I'm guessing the lower ball joints are shot. This will cause the tires to lean in on the top and and wear the inside of the tire. I could be wrong! Try jacking the front wheels up and support the vehicle on jack stands, now grab the tire top and bottom and try to rock it in and out. If there is movement, you will have to have someone watch to see what is moving, while you rock it. If it's the ball joints, they will need to be replaced before you can align it. This can be spendy, there's a lot of labor involved.

Both rear tires are wearing on the inside.


you need an alignment. Its a toe-in, your tie rods need to adjusted. Check your tire pressure too.

Tires wearing inside on 2008 Impala LT


this is a wheel camber (in and out tilt of wheel and tire) problem, u may have to have a Camber adjustment kit put in, most new cars have no adjustment provided for this. the bottom line here is you need to see a really good front end shop to get this taken care of, also the tires will continue to wear this way even if problem is corrected, so may want to replace them or rotate them.

Uneven wear on rear tires..


the front end will need alignment kits installed that allow for the adjustment to be made to correct the tire wear, this has to be done on a alignment machine to set correctly, just eye balling it is not an option.

At 1500 miles the front end was in need of alignment and the outside edge of the front tires were wearing down excessively.We took to the dealer and they aligned it When I went to rotate the tires at 5500...


once a were pattern is worn in tire s unless you rotate tires to the rear they will keep wearing you should rotate your tires every oil change especially if you do alot of around town driving i am willing to bet you that good year lied to you about the alignment i am sure the dealer put it into spec the first time you just need to rotate them a little more often
