SOURCE: 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee check engine light and display panel

did u try to find out what error code u have? if not turn the key over 3 times not full just to get a current flowing, on the third turn over leave it turned over and your engine light should flash twice a few seconds after the other. that lets u know that ur into the computer and now it will flash a certain amount of times depending on the code just keep count on how many times it does and look the code up in the manuel. it may get u closer to a solution

Engine Misfiring. Rough Idling. Losing power going up hills. Engine light flickered one day. I brought it to dealer. They said cyl 5 had a fouled spark plug. They replaced it, retuned and cleared code....

It sounds like it could be a bad coil pack that is used for number 5 cylinder. It could also be a bad spark plug wire. Does the weather seem to make a difference? Try this quick check once night time comes around. Open the hood and start the engine. Fill a bug sprayer with salt water and spray the plug wire while the engine is running. If the wire is bad, you might notice an electrical arc from the wire to the engine block. The engine will probably start running rough. If this occurs, then the wire should be replaced. If it doesn't, then the coil pack can be tested with an ohm meter. I hope this information has been helpful to you. Good luck with your problem and thank you for using

I had the check engine light come on, so I went by Autozone to have the code reacompd. The result was a cylinder 1 misfire. I then cleared the codes. The light came back on in a few miles. So I...

Yes you can have an "internitent" spark issue, because some misfires only happen under a specific condition, rpm, load, fuel trim. so first things first you have to find out what is cuasing the misfire, GM cars use a 3 pack coil system, and for the most part when you have a misfire on one cylinder you get it on 2 becuase each coil fires 2 times in the engine rotation, so you should pull the coil and check it with an Ohms on each post, now pull another coil pack and check that one agaist the other, then do this one more time with the last, this will give you a good idea, not foul proof though, of weather you have a bed coil before you go buy one, so lets assume that its not the coil pack, check your wire with a KV test, barrow one from autozone, the higher the Kv the faster the spark is going to ground, this will tell you if you have a bad wire / plug, refference it with the rest of the wires, very low Kv cirut is open or has a high resistance, very high Kv, shorted to ground. if it is non of the above then you are looking at replacing a controler that is under the coil packs, this can be tested with about a $6,000 osiliscope, but since you probly don't have one in your garage, better just test everything else and if that all passes just go buy a control moduel. Happy hunting...
Test, retest, and test again, Don't waste money parts swapping.

Very bad engine miss, looking for sparkplug location

Need to take off the plastic on the top of the engine (the plastic box) and the air cleaner hose that goes over to the throttle body. There you will see 6 coil packs. Remove one at a time (2 bolts each), under the coil pack are the spark plugs. I recommend using AC Delco 41-103's for the plugs, will idle better with these. When pushing the coils back on, make sure you hear or feel a little click, too many people install these back on incorrectly, which causes more misfires. If the misfire isn't corrected with the new plugs, check the coils. I also recommend cleaning your throttle body while you're at it, make sure to disconnect the battery while doing this. After it's clean, drive around for 5 miles or so to reset the computer.

If it has a very bad misfire, your check engine light should be on and OR blinking. If it's blinking, don't drive it. You'll probably pull a code of p0300, p0301 & so on which will tell you which cyclinder to focus in on.

It was running fine and then all of a suddun its running rough, it wont shift over and the engine light is blinking.. its a custom 2001 buik century. we need to fix the car so we can get back and forfth to...

flashing engine light means engine misfire. let car idle and mist the plug wires down with water, rev the engine up and down and look for little sparks jumping from the wires. and arcing wires can cause problems. before changing any bad wires check the coil packs where the wires plug in the three small boxes on the top back of motor. they are three packs with two wires each. one pack at a time take the two wires off to reveal the coil towers. have an assistant start the motor and make sure the spark goes from tower to tower. repeat on remaining two packs. if the spark goes straight down the tower the coil needs replaced. if there is no spark, the coil needs replaced.
