How to repair a 1997 Nissan pathfinder tailgate that will not open

If you can get to the back side of the tailgate handle, you will probably find a broken plastic part that would normally pull the latch at either both or one side. It seems to be a design defect, or enough corrosion in the latch to strain these plastic parts.

My 2008 pathfinder tailgate wont open after being hit by trailer

I had a similar problem with my pickup. It had a plate on the inside held on by phillips screws. After removing this plate I was able to slide the rods that held the gate shut and open the tailgate. My latch was broken and was then able to remove the latch and install a new one. It was not hard to do and I was able to remove the two nuts that held the latch on and take it to the dealer, purchase a new one, and fixed it myself. Hope this works for you.

Just got a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder in relatively good shape. How do I open the rear hatch/tailgate?

Insert your key into the lock and turn the key left to open the hatch, or right to open the window. There is also a small lever by the door latch that locks the hatch when you close it so you don't have to use the key.

Tailgate won't open

The latch is most likely jammed. This can occur when the trunk is closed and jams against something that is in the trunk. Bring it to a body shop and they should be able to fix it.

How do you open the tailgate on a 1990 nissan pathfinder?

To open the tailgate on a 1990 Nissan Pathfinder just insert the key in the lock and turn to the left, then pull the handle to open. To open just the window, turn key to the right.

There is also a small lever next to the latch on the tailgate that you push in to re-lock the tailgate before closing it.

Tailgate open/ lock latch in closed position so tailgate will not close/ can't et lock latch to open so I can close tailgate completely

Annoying, but easy to fix: Actuate the opening handle and manually rotate the latch to the open position.

1990 Nissan D21 Tailgate won't stay closed

Common problem on these vehicles. Keep it simple and bullet proof by just loosing the original arrangement and screwing in a manual latch on each side. A couple of gate latches are cheap and work forever. Not pretty but functional.
If you find anything at a junk yard it'll cost plenty and will be bound to fail like yours already has.

1992 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 tailgate wont latch

latches for this are on the sides. The are connected by the handle in the middle of the gate. Latches are either stuck open (dry or frozen open) or stuck closed and you are banging on them when trying to close and "latch" gate. Get a screwdriver and while pulling up on tailgate handle make sure latches(on gate) are open to engage "striker bolt". If they are spray them liberally with WD40 or silicone SPRAY. latch and open several times to let lubricant attack rusted area on mechanism.

If latches won't open they may be stuck closed and won't open because cable going from middle handle to that side or both sides is disconnected. Does tailgate have star shaped bolts on "inside-bed-when-closed" side? If so you will need to spray these with WD40 and let set then get a star torques bit and remove them to access middle handle actuator.
