Your valve cover gasket is leaking, allowing oil to get into the spark plug holes. You'll need to replace the valve cover gasket.

There is LOTS of oil covering my spark plugs, the other day I was driving on the hwy when it suddenly started slowing down even though my foot was on the pedal. I was going 70mph and then slowly dropped...

Hi and welcome to FixYa!
If there's oil on the sides of the engine valve cover then the valve cover gasket should be replaced. If there's oil on the spark plugs then the enginve valve seals must be replaced. Worn out valve seals can make the oil get in the plugs.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Oil around spark plug and car mis fires

The oil around the plug may be a sign that the valve-cover needs a new gasket. Oil on the plugs can cause a misfire but it is important that you check everything over. The misfire could be due to defective wires, boots, coils, spark-plug/s, injector/s, and so much more. Take a look at the cars maintenance history, Maybe it is over due for a complete tune-up or oil change. The car is 11years old, how many miles are on it? How was it running before this?

Changed the spark plugs and the old ones were covered in oil

i'm guessing that your car is a 4-cylinder. this is common for inline 4-cylinder engines. since the spark plug holes usually go through the valve cover, the valve cover gasket will leak and collect in the spark plug holes. to fix this you will have to replace the valve cover gasket.

Where and how do you replace the spark plugs

You should find some wires going into the rocker covers or valve covers, they are attached to the dist coil which has 3 coils with 2 wires coming from each, follow them into your rocker covers, pull 1 plug at a time, get a 6 inch extension on your ratchet, and the right sized spark plug wrench, pull out the plug and take a peak, Most cars go a million miles on plugs now days, I haven't changed plugs in years. Unless you are burning oil, then a plug will foul. replace them with platinum tipped, if it doesn't fix the problem, it is the wires that usually cause more trouble than plugs.

How to replace a PCV valve on my 1997 dodge neon? I travel over 60 miles a day and when at stop lights i have a light rough idle. Just replaced the plugs and wires 15k miles ago and the air filter 500...

Once you have the new PCV valve locate the old one on your engine. It will sit on the middle of one of your valve covers (most likely passenger side) and will have a line that connects to the top of the valve. Simply pull the old one out and put the new one in snapping that line on the new one. Should only take about a minute to do. Hope this helps, let me know if it does.
