My 1996 Jeep Cherokee's headlights don't come on when I pull the switch but after about 30 seconds they come on and then sometimes when driving down the road they go out. What's going on?

I'm going to post this in the clarification section. I don't have a wiring diagram for a 96 Grand Cherokee headlight circuit. The 95 models used a circuit breaker built-into the headlight switch. The 97 models used a fuse in the fuse box. If your model uses the headlight circuit breaker, a short in one of the headlights or the wiring harness would trip the circuit breaker in the switch. You could unplug one headlight at a time to see if it continues to go on and off.
I would call a dealer because usually when there's flashing lights involved it's a code. If it runs for a few seconds then dies it could be a plugged fuel pump or plugged line. The pump is able to pull enough fuel to let it run for a short time but then runs out. Hope it helps.
It's likely you have a loose connection or a bad switch. I recomend haveing a mechanic look at it unless you are experianced with automotive electric systems. These sort of problems tend to be a nightmare for the "doityourselfer".
They will reach a point where they will not operate at all. This id due to an open circuit in the headlight switch. If you replace the switch, your lights will function just as they were meant to. Thanks, Dana
You usually reset the computer by removing the negative battery terminal for about 5 minutes, then replace it. After this, your ECU (in teh next 40 strats) learn your drive mode.
The headlights are on a relay and maybe its getting weak. I would have it checked and replaced because it could go out and stay out. God Bless Greg Oh yeah most of the time it is built into the head light switch.
