First check the battery connection off the alternator going to the battery/starter for an inline fuse if you want you can disconnect the battery and check this with an ohmmeter to see if the inline fuse is good,if so then a bad cell or cells in a battery will not let it charge correctly and will also burn up a new alternator quickly

it is normally spliced into the line in a black rubber/plastic cylinder slightly larger than a cartridge fuse would be,on g.m. vehicles they are normally near the alternator,on newer ones they can be near the engine compartment fuse/relay box under the hood the location varies on vehicles

  • danny Hendrickson May 16, 2010

on a 92 s-10 its just about 6" from the alternator inside the wire, its in a round rubber/plastic molded case a chiltons auto manual should show you exactly where the fuse is on your particular vehicle

when i take off battery cable my1996 GMC JIMMY while it's running, the engine shuts off

  • danny Hendrickson May 16, 2010

did you get the reply on the inline fuse,it is in a rubber/plastic sleeve on the battery wire from the alternator, you can look in a chiltons auto manual for exact location on your vehicle

  • danny Hendrickson May 16, 2010

take a voltage reading with the vehicle off,if its under 9.8 volts d.c. the e.c.m. will not have enough voltage to keep it operating and will shut down,so either your battery is sulfated,a shorted cell(s),a bad inline fuse from the alternator to the battery circuit or a broken wire in this circuitry

  • danny Hendrickson May 16, 2010

the E.C.M. stands for the Electronic Control Module and without proper voltage it will shut down as in no fuel pump, etc. so a bad battery, open alternator fuse, open charging circuit will cause this,it takes a minimum of 9.6 volts d.c. battery to keep the e.c.m. operating

have you load tested the battery yet?to make sure it holds at a load of about 11.2 volts minimum under a load

Location alternator fuse

What do you mean "charged alt"?
The Alternator either works or it doesn't.
There is no fuse in the alternator circuit.
If the Battery is not getting charged while you drive, then the Alternator is at fault.

Battery light goes on and off. got new battery twice this year and it still dies. mechanic cannot find problem and says it's not the alternater. help, I never know when the battery is going to die.

ITS EITHER ALTERNATOR OR ALTERNATOR WIRES BROKEN OR DAMAGED.IF ALTERNATOR WIRES LOOKS OKAY.I WOULD REPLACE ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY CABLES.WHEN BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON ALTERNATOR IS NOT CHARGING BATTERY.REPLACING BATTERY TWICE A YEAR IS CHARGING PROBLEM.ALTERNATOR NOT DOING ITS JOB.IF YOU BUY ANOTHER ALTERNATOR BUY CORRECT AMP ALTERNATOR BUY WHAT FACTORY PUT IN.

The alternater keeps going out. We have replaced

sometimes you are just the unlucky soul that gets bum alternators or your battery in the truck has enough juce to crank it over but is almost dead and your alternator is burning up trying to charge a battery that wont accept a decent charge. plus clean the battery terminals

Replaced battery twice/dead cells

More then likely just a fluke on 2 batteries, but i would check the output on the alternator to make sure it is NOT over charging.

change your battery cables and check all wires on the alternator for loose connections, expecially the grounds.
