Question about 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

I have an 01 grand marquis with no spark and no fuel pump. I plugged a code scanner into the plug under the dash turned on the key and the scanner does nothing. All the dash lights and everything else comes on with the key but the scanner does nothing. Does this mean that the computer in the car is probley shot?

Not exactly. The scanner doesn't get its power from the computer of the car, but from another pin, which is the 16. You may have some blown fuses to the computer, which could be the same fuse for the pin 16 which is the power for the scanner. You can check on the Data Link Connector pin 16 if you have 12v, if you don't start looking for blown fuses.

My 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander turns over and cranks but will not start. The engine light comes on but I don't know how to check the code or if there's any codes to find out what the problem is

It is not starting most likely due to lack/no fuel or no spark. You will have to determine if there is a fuel supply. Can you hear the fuel pump come on if you remove the gas cap and put your ear close while turning the key to the on position? If you can't hear it operate for a second or two, it may not be working. Pull a spark plug wire off the spark plug and hold it over the engine and crank the motor. If a continuos spark is present the ignition system is ok.

Can you replace a spark plug on a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis without pulling the AC

yes you can. the spark plugs are located on top of the motor under the fuel rails. it has coil packs on each cylinders. you need to unbolt the coil turn it then pull it out. its a tight fit but can be done. For more room you can puul the fuel rails. but can be done with. good luck

My engine will turn but not scanner says put key in "on" position but it is. fusses are all good and i replaced fuel pump relay

Even though you replaced the fuel pump relay, can you hear your fuel pump kicking on? If not then your fuel pump is bad, if it is bad, then I would recommend replace filter. After that take a look at your plugs and wires, see if the plugs are shot or the wires are bad.

My 1998 Mercury Grande Marquis intermittently fails to start. The scanner does not show a code. After about 20 minutes it has started. There are no warning lights coming on. Joe Thigpen, Austin, Texas

Who had the scanner, a repair shop?

Are you talking about a personal code reader?

Have you checked the fuel pressure at the rail?

We need more info
You haven't said what you do have, and what tests
determined what you have e.g. spark, fuel pressure.

Are you referring to the starter turning the engine over
or the engine not running?

Most llikely you have a failed fuel pump in the gas tank

Car runs but when you accelerate the car sputters and shakes does that mean replace the spark plugs and wires

Possibly, but other things can cause the same symptoms. If the check engine light is on, a scanner read of the computer will give you better clues that 'hip shooting' parts replacement can do. Possible things to look for--weak fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, water in the fuel, spark plugs and wiring, O2 sensor, and the list goes on.

So you have power there, why not try a little whap with rubber hammer near it while key on to see if it will do anything. I;d try it just to see if it will come back to life.
