Need help changing the rear brake pads...can not compress the piston

You can use a "g" clamp or similar to push the piston back. Leave an old pad in there to push against. Check the piston is not corroded as pushing corrosion back past the seal can cause damage, It can be a little easier as well to crack rhe bleed valve.

You need a special tool that fits in the piston face and snaps on a 3/8" rachet and you turn the piston in now,not compress them anymore

SOURCE: rear brake piston compression problem?

As far as I know, most front disc brake setups have pistons that are pressed back into the cylinders using a C-clamp or something similar.

However, not all rear disc systems are like this. There are some that require that the rear pistons be screwed back into the cylinder bores. These pinstons usually have some kind of indentations on the front where special tools fit and help move them back into the cylinder.

Your Hyundai may have this kind of setup.

FIRST REMOVE SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE FLUID FROM THE BRAKE MASTERCYLINDER. THEN USE A LARGE C - CLAMP AND LEAVE THE OLD BRAKE PAD IN PLACE ON PISTON SIDE THEN COMPRESS THE PISTON IN CALIPER BORE. Steps to replacing rear brake pads


A special tool is required to compress the caliper piston on the rear brakes-don't use a C-clamp on the piston.
Raise the vehicle and remove the tire. The rear calipers have only one guide pin. Remove this pin and raise the caliper. Remove the old brake pads. Using the special tool compress the caliper piston-the piston will have one or two slots on it. These slots must in the correct position to remount the caliper. Install the new brake pads and slide the caliper back over the rotor and replace the guide pin. If the caliper doesn't slide over the rotor you'll need to reset the slots on the piston. Replace the tires and you're ready to go.

Rent a tool from auto zone to help you compress the rear brake piston. It cannot be compressed with c clamp because the piston must be turned while it is compressed.
Autozone will charge you approx. $60 for the rental and then you get all your money back when you bring the tool back.
You need to compress the rear piston so you have room for the new, thicker pads.
The rest of the job is just like any other brake job. 1. remove one pin bolt and rotate caliper open to get to the pads. 2. compress the piston in with the tool 3. replace the pads. 4. assemble.

front or rear? in front only need to remove the 2 screws of caliper, remove it and compress the caliper piston with a c-clamp put the new pads, caliper and tight the screws. no that is only the older rear calipers on gm and others. the fronts do not have that style caliper and sound like the calipers are frozen and may be way your changing the pads. try opening the bleeder screw and then compressing them if they go then you need need brake hoses and if not you need calipers. god luck man

When trying to change the rear pads on a 2005 Montana SV6 I was not able to compress the caliper. It appears as if they need to have the pressure relieved from the system. Do I need to just apply more...


No, on rear wheel disc brakes, the pistons have to be turned in clockwise, and you need a special tool to do it, or you have something strong enough to put in the slots and turn it, but just turn them in far enough to get the new pads to slide over the rotors.

1996 olds aurora back brake pad replacement, how to compress the pads to get the caliper back over the pads?


Special tool is a 1" cube with tabs on each side that fits into indentations on the brake piston and can be purchased for $10-12 @ most discount parts stores. Use 3/8" ratchet with short extension and 'special tool to carefully turn piston onto internal hand brake screw. Take care to not tear dust boot. When piston is fully collapsed, make sure to align piston indentations perpendicular to brake pad as there are bumps on pad that fit into them. Also while screwing in piston either remove about 2/3 of brake fluid in master cylinder and refil afterwords or open the bleeder valve on brake piston assembly. Bleed if necessary.

Changing front brake pads FIRSTTIME


You can compress the piston with a large C clamp. Screw type pistons are generally at the rear, when caliper is also used as emergency brake. I generally use the inner brake pad to protect the piston from damage while compressing it. If it does not retract it may be frozen or the rubber line going to it has internally failed. After completing change, pump brake a few times to re-set piston position so you have brakes.

try going to the site below here as well as reading this, it's really helpful and informative, it's a nice step by step. braking systems, when it comes to changing the brake pads hasn't really changed much with modern technology, just remember to used the proper tools to compress all the pistons equally, and also if your pistons have that cross going over the top of them then you have to use a pair of needle nosed pliers to turn the piston counterclockwise this will compress the piston.....hope this and the site are helpful....good luck and happy wrench turning!
