SOURCE: I'd like to replace the stock shifter knob (or

Usually there is a nut on the bottom of a shift knob that needs to be loosened, then the knob just screws off. Use a wrench, if it's hexagonal, if it's just round or there is no nut it may just screw off. It will be really tight though, be prepared to have to really crank on it to get it loose. The new one should just thread back on. You may need to install a nut on the bottom to adjust the rotation of any pattern or gear shift diagram on the new one.

Good Evening, I'm sorry to hear your shift knob broke however it does sound like you are on the right track to a solution. As far as ease of repair I would tell you it is best to repair what you have instead of trying to put in an aftermarket one. In most cases it is an easier fix which most repair parts you can find at your local auto recycling yard (salvage yard/junk yard). Hope this helps. And if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Replace stick shift knob

Unscrew it by rotating the shift knob counter clockwise. It can be a little bit hard the first time.

The gear shift gets stuck and won't shift into other gears. Will put it reverse and then try to put in drive and it gets stuck in reverse.

Either the shift knob or the actuator rod under the shift knob has worn out.
Remove the shift knob and pull the actuator rod (plastic) out of the shift lever and inspect it for wear or damage. If the rod is not worn or damaged, replace the shift knob and you will be good to go.
Good luck.

Removing Factory Gear Shift Knob for 2001 Jetta

On my 2000 jetta glx, I had to replace both the shift knob and boot as one. It is built as one unit. You have to pull the boot up over the shift knob, break/bend a clip to "unlock" the shift knob then pull up. I hope the new knob you got has the boot built in and comes with a new clip.

Removal of gear shift knob

There are two types of shift knobs. One that unscrews and one that the lower trim of the shift knob separates from the knob using a trim stick. After separating the lower trim from the knob pull upward to release the knob from the shift lever. If a new shifter assembly is being installed, unscrew the original shift knob or separate the lower trim from the knob and pull up to remove the knob from the shift lever. Screw the knob onto the new shifter assembly's lever no more than 14 turns or install the lower trim onto the shift lever then push the knob onto the shift lever and install the lower trim piece onto the shift knob.
