Howling noise from the transmission

My 2001 acura mdx touring suv is making a howling noise from the transmission. sounding like the pinion gear in the tranny is howling. when i accelerate it howls and when i let off the throttle it stops. between 40-60 mph it gets to be fairly loud or have to have radio on a little to counter it. how can i quiet this issue with my high mileage acura without tearing into the transmission?. apx 145,000 miles. You will need to pull it ,and have it rebuilt. Need to be careful, because they usually don't touch the diff,on a trans axle rebuilt

I would get a reman from the dealer and have a shop R&R yours, then return the core.

Had a similar problem with my '01 MDX - 120k miles about 3 mos ago. Made a clunking noise and suddenly locked up. Had it towed to my local mechanic that specializes in Acuras/Hondas and got a rebuilt one for about $1200 less than the dealer was quoting. No problems since and have driven from Calif to Colo and back,

check that the safety switch on the tranny is still connected . It is the switch that stops anything working until the tranny is in neutral or park That is the area I would be looking at first

My 2001 Acura MDX automatically disengage to neutra from gear four.I have service the gear, change the gear sensor and the fibers, still the problem persist.what is the way out?ensor

Hi,
Acura and Honda have a KNOWN Issue w/the Torque Converter in the Automatic Transmission. Very likely you'll need to have it rebuilt....may be cheaper to trade it in on a newer car.

Search for 'Acura automatic transmission issues' online.

Changing cabin airfilter for a 2001 acura mdx

It is. I believe on your MDX you have to remove the glovebox 10mm screws. Then there is a drawer in the plastic HVAC housing that unclips on both sides and slides out. If it hasn't been changed before, on most Honda and Acura SUVs you have to carefully cut the plastic that covers the support to remove the metal bar to get to the drawer. You need to keep the plastic because it screw into it's old position after the job is complete.
