Question about 1998 Buick Century

1 Answer

After replacing the battery on my 1998 Buick Century the car will not crank. I can hear the fuel pump energizing but no attempt to crank. My question is this Is there anyway to eliminate some of the possible problems? It could be the starter, solenoid, Ignition switch, or even a crank shaft sensor. There could be one other thing but I am not sure if it applies to this vehicle and that is key recognition problems, but that would mean that the fuel pump would not energize correct. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I would double check the battery connections make sure they are tight enough. It takes alot more amperage to turn over a starter then to operate a fuel pump if the connection is poor it can cause this.

My 2002 Buick century wont (crank) turn over ..jumped solenoid,it turns over but won't start ..checked all fuses and relays.. good happened after attempting to rewire front turn signal broken plug

Turn signal plug should have nothing to do with it not starting. Disconnect the battery for 10 to 15 minutes. Then try again with the key.
When you jumped the solenoid, it would start because the key may have not been in the run position. So the Security light was on, and did not energize the fuel pump.

Disconnect the battery as stated.

Is there a fuel reset button on a 1998 Buick century in case of a front end bump

No. Ford is the only manufacturer that uses a resettable inertia switch to cut power to the fuel pump in the event of a collision.

98 buick century turns over wont start

Rose, Can you hear the fuel pump 'buzz' for a few seconds when you turn the key to the 'on' position? Is so. and I know this sounds crazy, but try turning your heater fan switch all the way to the high position and then try cranking it. Another Buick Century owner told about this in another forum and it works for him and others. Apparently there is a fault in the computer and the electrical current draw from the heater fan has a positive effect on it. It's worth a try. If this works for you please post on this site so that others may benefit. Thanks

I just drove my 2002 Buick Century for 1 hour and parked it. Went to start it 20 minutes later and the engine makes no attempt to turn over. The radio and accessories are powered but there is no sound or...

You need to eliminate the possibilities.

Will jumper cables get it running? You may have a weak battery.

If the car makes a GRR GRR sound, the problem is either a weak battery or bad solenoid.

Check the solenoid: http://www.wikihow.com/Test-a-Starter-Solenoid

When the ignition switch is faulty, the engine will keep cranking while the dashboard lights stay off.

When a starter fails or malfunctions, you may hear a clicking noise when turning the key in the ignition. But there might be loose wiring around the starter. Eliminate that possibility. Here is advice on starter troubleshooting:
http://www.type2.com/bartnik/starter.htm
I suspect the problem is the starter but here are other matters to test.

Does the car have gas? Check the fuel gauge.

The fuel pump: a weak fuel pump or failed fuel pump relay may prevent the fuel from reaching the engine. If you listen closely, you should be able to hear the in-tank pump running for a few seconds when you first turn the key to the "on" position - before cranking the starter.

Check the spark plugs --a relatively rare source of the problem but they are usually changed at least every 100000 miles.

Is the car in park and your foot pushing in the break? Some modern cars will not start otherwise.

1990 Buick Century Limited 6cly wont start turn over or crank

Usually if the battery is dead, you will hear clicking. If the battery is good then I would check any Starter fuses/relays. If they are good then I would check for power to the starter solenoid. You can find many youtube videos on how to check this.

98 buick century wont start FUEL PROBLEM

many fuel pumps get there power from the relay that is energized by the ECM
there is a pressure regulator in the system that will report to the ECM to switch on the fuel pump when the pressure falls
if you have no power to the relay , it could be because the pressure in the fuel system is above cut in pressure or that pressure regulator is not passing the current to the ECM

You have a fuel starvation problem, fuel pump, pressure regulator, injectors, any or all of them could be the reason why you are not getting fuel. Someone is going to have to lay hands and eyes on the thing and check it out.
