Question about Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

My 1997 Pontiac Bonneville has never had the heater hoses replaced. The factory service manual says to use Tool j-37097 to remove and install the clamps. Tool costs about $400! I can see the clamps (they are spring type) and can even touch them, but for the life of me I can't imagine how do this without this tool (I even question how it can be done WITH the tool) What do I need to do to change these hoses myself?

Just ordered the tool. I think it will probably do the trick. It's still going to be a bear getting the old hoses off and the new ones on though.

    Thanks

Sears makes a clamp removal tool that may work for you. It runs $40.00, and could be used on those type of clamps. I'm going to be buying one soon myself. I hate those clamps!!!!

I would try to cut the hoses and spray some WD-40 on the hoses to help get them loose, becareful of the tubes going into the heater core.

You have correctly trouble shot a plugged heater core. Install a back flush kit on the car. They can be had at an auto parts store. Get new anti freeze too.

I need copies of the instructions to replace the heater core on a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville. I want copies from the actual GM Shop Service manual only.

You can get the actual service manuals at faxonautoliterarure.com and have them for future reference as well. Hope this helps.

How i replace the heater element in my 1997 Pontiac SSEI

I assume you're referring to the heater core. Its located under the passenger side of the dash.I removed the passenger side seat and did it on my back.It took me about 4-5 hours as I had never done one before. The hose clamps(in the engine compartment side) are very difficult to get to without a special hose clamp tool.If you've never done it I say take it a good mechanic!

Grab yourself a cable type hose clamp tool.. a long pair of hose removal pliers. drain the radiator and remove the hose clamps and hosed from the passenger side firewall ( hidden behind the A/c acumulator ).
from the passenger side remove the end cap from the heater box under the dash. take it out and put it back together in the reverse order.
