Feel lucky the problem just started! Mine has been not working since about 50K miles...I am told there is a chip that controls all of the gauges, thermostat, gas gauge etc...costs about $400 to replace

My 05 Focus speedometer is wacky. All other gauges and systems work fine. The speedometer needle doesn't go to zero when vehicle stops moving.

Sounds like the speedometer is faulty. If the speed sensor were the problem, the odometer would not work correctly, the transmission would not shift correctly, and the check engine light would be on.

My speedometer is not reading my speed! My accelaration and the power to go is completely there. If I'm on the freeway or parked, gauge says that I'm still going 25 mph. The gauge does move, but is FAR...

If the odometer is correct, the problem is in the speedometer head. If the odometer is also not accurate, it may be the speed sensor in the transmission.

Would a bad input speed sensor make my transmission stop working

absolutely-Correct speedometer / odometer readings, and the speed signal sent to the Engine, Powertrain, and Anti-lock Brake Control Modules. Besides the obvious, these modules affect fuel delivery, engine timing, and automatic transmission shift points-modules have to have accurate information to properly control components.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

Speedometer - 40MPH

the speedo is electronic, not cable, this problem is caused by a sticking stepper motor that moves the needle, a stepper motor is a miniature electric motor that can move and hold one position, this was a common problem at the dealer I worked at, u will need to pull the speedo and send it out for repair, I use the following link for this service.

1997 Geo Metro speedometer and odometer do not work

Let me guess, it goes up to about 30, stays there, and if you go faster (past what would be the halfway point of your speedometer) it starts dropping below 30. It sounds like the type of speedometer that uses two magnetic cores at 90 degrees to each other, and one has gone out.

Troubleshooting and repair should be similar to this: http://www.fieros.de/en/articles/speedo.html
