If you plan to diagnose this yourself you can go to alldata.com or mitchell1diy (search) and you can get all the info you need.

The charging system is computer controlled. If you have 12volts on the big wire then the fuse is not popped. You prabably havea computer issue. Also with the car running do you still have the same voltage as with the car off. . You will need a digital meter to diagnose this yourself.

Overcharging

I'm going to assume your meter is accurate and you have verified the 18.4 reading.
Something has to be bypassing the regulator to make the alternator charge at full power. The regulator breaks the circuit dozens of times per minute to maintain 14 volts. Does the alternator charge with the regulator unplugged ?

The computer controls alternator output. If the alternator passes a bench test but is not charging at idle speed on the car, it could be the computer or a bad connection in the harness.

Charging system fault

Yup, that won't be enough as it is normal battery voltage. You need 13.8 to 14.8 or so. Pull the alternator and get it bench tested. Alternators have diodes inside (one way valve for electricity, that converts alternating current to direct current, which your car is). and these diodes fail and leak. There is a set that turns on the regulator that fail..

All will have the same result. rebuild the alternator.

If it bench tests okay, be sure to guarantee good ground cuicuit.

Had the red battery light come in 323i car still drives what does this mean

You likely have a battery and/or alternator problem. Most auto supply stores will do checks on both items, usually at no charge.

Yes, you need a new alternator, and probably a new battery too since it gave up the ghost while slowly dieing from the bad alternator!

Good luck
