from memory i know mitsubishi use crank angle sensors on the balancer so im thinking either the rubber in the balancer has shifted slightly or worst case you've worn the crank or timing belt crank pulley keyway. also guessing it turbo your car.

According to my haynes manual for Landrover 200tdi, G - S reg,1989-1998 it goes as follows,
Stage 1:- Tighten all bolts to 30lb ft or 40Nm then
Stage 2:- Angle tighten a further 60 degrees then
Stage 3:- Angle tighten a further 60 degrees again.

SOURCE: experiencing a
it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise

SOURCE: like piston slap
in this car piston slap is normal and will not cause any further damage to the engine, almost all LT 1 and LT 5 have this issue as long as it goes away after engine heats up, this comes from a GM service bulletin. and no the oil pump has nothing to do with this, cylinder walls are splashed by oil.

I'm thinking this is a escort, correct me if i'm wrong. It has a 2.0 liter motor. They would get loose valve seats, and make noise, and cause motor damage.Take it to your local repair shop, that can diagnosis it properly.I might cost more than the vehicle is worth.Good luck!
