It could be water pump it could also be power steering pump or even the alternator but sounds like for sure one of the units that the belt drives

When the belts age they dryrot like tires, Twist the belt upside down and bend slightly, You will likely see cracks, Just replace the belt and you should be good to go

Usually dirty pulleys or a pulley that is not properly aligned.Try cleaning the pulleys and see how that works first. If the noise is still there check the alignment or check to see if there is oil or coolant getting on the belt.A water pump will make more of a growling noise.Hope this helps.Good luck.

I have a 1999 Mercury Sable. The only problem I have had with the car is the serpentine belt. It started 3 months ago . . . the engine was overheating and the belt was shredding. I bought a belt tensioner...

take the belt off and carefully check to see if any of the pulleys are out of line and check to make sure they spin smooth and true check for bearing wear and noise in any of the pulleys cause it sounds like simply there is a pulley out of line

is the a/c working ok??? shredding the belt may be cause by the a/c compressor problems. the "chunk" maybe not, but shredding tells me something does not spin when it should. I dont know why the mehanic put a new pump on that had a problem with the pulley, it should be smooth. anyhting that the belt runs should be smooth and east to turn, make sure that all of the grooves are clean, no remnants of the old belt.

Change serpentine belt and tension pulley and idle pulley and

could be the alternator, water pump
take the belt and spin all the pulleys and listen for noise and make sure they turn smoothly
another trick is to take a can of wd40 or equivalent and spray the bearings 1 at a time till the noise goes away or quiets down

Continuous Chirping Noise In and around my serpentine belt.

sounds like a bearing in an idler or tensioner is going out.you need to take to any good mechanic and he can pinpoint the chirp.

Can a alternator PULLEY make a chirping noise?

It's possible that the alternator is making the chirp noise (bearing) but I would try this first. Start the engine and allow the engine to idle and open the hood and take a spray can of WD40 and shoot a short burst onto the bottom side of the belt and pulley. Dont spray allot as this will cause the belt to slip. The WD40 is to lube the pulley grooves and belt a slight bit. Hope this works!
