Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My 1997 cavalier takes about 7 trys to finally start. Spark plugs are fine no loose ground wires doesn't smell funny or nothing when it finally starts. Could it be an ignition or starter problem?

If your plug boots come off with ignition coil housing, remove it, then use spark tester in plug boot. Crank the engine and watch for spark. You would probably want to pull fuel injector fuse, no need to spray gas.

Then use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Some vehicles don't have a Schrader valve, so you need proper fittings to tee into supply line, in order to use pressure gage. Don't take any fuel lines loose unless your sure, no pressure on the system.
I can only help with testing.

Im sorry, its a 1997 ford 302 (1997 mercury mountaineer) codereader indicates 'no. 7 cylinder misfire'

remove the #7 spark plug if it does not look fouled start the vehicle with the plug still connected and look at the ground electrode for any spark it should be a white arc which indicates a high intensity spark if its orange/red it is a weak spark. If you get a poor spark try removing any other spark plug and test it on the #7 coil wire If you still get a poor spark then your plug wire or ignition coil is to blame and would need to be replaced. You can swap your plus wire to test it in the same way as well. hope this helps

Car Starts Really Rough.

Check the fuel/air sensor and air filter. When you first start the car only press the accelerator pedal once. If while turning the ignition switch you here a grinding noise that would be your starter going out. The smell of fuel signals that your car is either flooded from pressing pedal or fuel mixture is incorrect. Hope this helps.

97 cavalier won't start when wet

That is your distributor cap. It either has a crack or isn't tight. The rubber seal could also be shot. Condensation from outside moisture builds up inside your cap while it sits. It wastes the spark on the water droplets instead of your contact points. Next time it happens, take the cap off and wipe it dry on the inside. Don't take the wires off. If your going to change it, label each wire starting at 1 mark. Hope this helps.
