Question about Infiniti I35

1 Answer

2001 I30, gas pedal must be held down to set idle from cold start. My mechanic says the ECM and IAC must be replaced. I found a place that will reprogram my ECM and they say that will work but I also will need to replace the Throttle position sensor and Air intake temperature sensor. My mechanic said the sensors are fine and don't need to be replaced. What do I do?

Hi! Used to work on one too and I agree to your second mechanic. ECM may need to be reprogrammed, throttle position sensor, air intake temperature and the MAF (mass air flow) sensor may need to be replaced. The MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially the idling. Hope this shed some light, Good luck!

Does the IAC valve replace the cold start valve or injector on a 2000 camry v6

IAC or idle control valve would be unlikely to replace a cold start sensor or injector
run the fault codes and check for ambient temp sensor problem that is not telling the ECM to rich up the fuel mixture ( choke ) for the cold air coming in
the ECM will adjust the idle speed accordingly to the responses from the temp sensor

My 99 malibu starts and dies right away. It won't stay on unless I keep the gas pedal down and rpm above 1500

the ( iac ) idle air control is sticking and needs cleaned. heres how to clean. locate it on the throttle body, remove wire connector, remove the torx screws that hold it on. when off of car. clean valve on end you can use a old toothbrush or similar to do this. do not push in on valve it will mess up idle setting. on the 3.1 the setting is 1 and 1/8 from tip of valve to body of iac. you can use gumout spray or throttlebody cleaner. here are a few symtoms-- stalls after starts, when cold or hot. stalling on deceleration, stalls at idle, unstable idle, low idle, or stuck on high idle. hope this helps !

clean the idle air control valve. This thing controls your idle speed but gets gummed up with deposits. buy a can of spray carb cleaner and maybe a cheap set of torx L wrenches if you dont have any. remove IAC and clean valve and bore with paper towels and carb cleaner. Also use some of that carb cleaner to clean the throttle bore and plate using an old toothbrush and towels. and lastly replace the PCV valve. Your truck will now idle like it just came off the showroom floor!

The throttle position sensor responds to the accelerator pedal movement. This sensor is a kind of potentiometer which transforms the throttle position into output voltage and emits the voltage signal to the ECM. In addition, the sensor detects the opening and closing speed of the throttle valve and feeds the voltage signal to the ECM. Idle position of the throttle valve is determined by the ECM receiving the signal from the throttle position sensor. This one controls engine operation such as fuel cut, etc. The throttle position sensor unit has a built-in “wide open and closed throttle position switch,” which is not used to control the engine. For the G35, the throttle position sensor is part of the throttle control actuator.

try unplugging the ect, iat, and b1s1 o2 so the vehicle cant tell how much fuel to give and resorts to base programming if it idles then its not your iac look for a vacuum leak, or a vacuum hose installed improperly but it would have to be a big leak, engine needs alot more fuel when its cold, a big vacuum leak would lean it out bad when cold but not so bad when warm

Idled high, replace IAC and PCV, now idles low and stalls

On modern day cars the parts that get fitted need to be adapted to the ECM using a decent diagnostic machine. I bet that this was not done and the car is now suffering as a result.
Something to try is resetting the ECU, simply disconnect battery for 10 minutes, reconnect, then start car from cold *without touching gas pedal* and leave idling until the rad fan comes on (this resets all the base idle settings) then take it for a drive - hopefully will solve the problem

Car stalls when you let off the gas when warm or idling

sounds like your IAC (idle air control valve) located on the throttle body towards the front of the engine held in by 2 torx screws. the iac controls the idle if the car when your not on the gas. i will post the steps to clean the iac and the passages that the iac goes into.

1. disconnect the iac connector
2. remove the iac
3 clean the iac pintle valve and check for wear
4. clean the passages that the pintle valve sits in (usually carbon build-up in there, you may need to remove the air intake tube and air filter box to get to the passages in the throttlebody)
5. if the iac looks ok and the passages are cleaned re-install and put everything back
6. start car and see if it idles like normal when warmed up. you may need to give it a few tries for the iac to re-learn its proper position so give it a few warmup cycles
7. if it still stalls check for proper operation of the iac via ohming out the connectors (if you look it up on google you will find the specs at which the iac is supposed to operate)
8. if the iac is working properly, check for vacuum leaks on the intake manifold and vacuum lines.
9. if no vacuum leaks are present and the iac id working properly after cleaning have a shop check the ecm (engine control module) for a bad circuit board, i've seen that haoppen as well

hope this helps!
