Question about 2009 Hyundai Accent

1 Answer

My wife and I bought a 2009 Hyundai Accent in August of 2009. Since new the car has made weird transmission sounds while idle in gear, or reversing slowly. The car also shakes during the latter once in a while. After about 3,000 miles, the transmission started clunking, especially up hills when shifting from 4th to 3rd. It feels like running over a rodent when it clunks, so its not just a little slip of a band or adjustment. We took it in. they said it is fine because it wouldn't clunk for them. The only problem is they test drive flat ground in the city at lower speeds. This seems to happen going uphill and randomly. The mechanic then told us to keep driving it, and it won't hurt anything. He wanted it to get worse before they took it seriously. Well since the last time we took it in the clunk is getting worse, about 5 times every 200 miles driven. During one such clunk the car actually stalled from about 50 mph to around 35 instantly jerking the car and my wife. She said it felt like a manual transmission vehicle that was stalled. What could possibly be causing this phenomenon? They checked the computer for codes, there were none. And they reset the transmission shift points and the auto relearn sequence. So it has to be an actual mechanical problem. I don't want this problem to cause an accident, or damage the vehicle any further. Hyundai refuses to believe us. If anyone is having this same problem with this vehicle, or if anyone might know that the problem sounds like it could be. Possibly then I could present them with that information. Thank you very much for your time. Chris

I have made a complaint to corporate. We live far away from any of the Hyundai dealers, and they want to keep the car for a while to evaluate the problem. Which brings me to them lying when we first bought the car. They stated that the warranty covers rental/loaner costs, but after the contract was signed and the first issue occurred at 600 miles they denied ever saying that. I live in a mountain range, mountain driving is when it puts on its best show. All the dealers being located in city's they will not be able to verify the problem. So I hope with some expert opinions and documentation of when/how it clunks we will be able to get the car fixed without the hassle of waiting till they can hear it. I know this clunking is damaging parts of the car they will not replace, but they say don't worry it isn't hurting anything. Thank you for your time and opinion. Chris

In your owners manual there is a phone number to file a complaint to the corporation. Do that first of all. I owned a Hyundai that did very strange things although I had strange braking problems which was repaired at a shop of my preference and was reimbursed.
The problem with yours has to be an internal transmission problem. Nothing will be found unless the transmission is removed and completely torn apart for inspection. More than likely a brass bushing is egged out making the trans to act so eractic

I cannot get 2 4 and reverse gears on my hyundai accent 02 plate

Sounds like you lost a couple of solenoids on the transmission. Needs to go a scanner to find which ones are bad.

When the check engine light flashes it means DONT RUN IT or you will damage the engine. There are codes that your mechanic pulled from the computer, WHAT ARE THOSE CODES?

2009 Hyundai accent jerks when I put it in reverse or drive sometimes. What could be the problem

If I'm correct when you say **** your referring to a clunk or lift felt when you put in gear. This would most likely be either a broken transmission or motor mount.

2009 Hyundai accent in 5th gear the RPM is 4000 is this normal? My speed is 115 Klm an hour

No, it is not. You should be around 2500 rpm at 115 Kilometers an hour. Even if you were in 4th it should only be around 3000 rpm. At 115 MPH you would be near the 4000 RPM. Your either running on 3 cylinders or your transmission is in trouble and needs repair.

My car was driving fine, and then all of a sudden, I went to accelerate after coming around a turn, and the car wouldn't shift into 2nd gear. It seems to drive fine in 1st, but it won't go into reverse...

Sounds like you're low on transmission fluid. Let the car warm up and then check the transmission fluid while it is in neutral at idle while it is parked on a level surface (make sure the emergency brake is on of course). If it is low use only dealer fluid. Hyundai takes a special automatic transmission fluid and if mixed with a universal fluid can ruin their transmissions.
