Question about 1998 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

1998 Mazda Protege 1.5L Vechile Speed sensor problems.

Change the oil in my car. Took it for a test drive and found that the speedometer, odometer does not work. The over drive light flashes on and off. The check engine light came on. I had the code scanned at auto zone and it said vechile speed senor was bad. The dealer wanted $250.00 for a new one. I went to a upick junk yard and bought on for $8.10 out of a 97 Protege. I pulled the old sensor and ohmed and got about 350 ohms. I held up to a drill chuck and it does generate AC pulses. I'm start ohming the wires at the computer. Am I missing something? Fuses are all good. The Vechile speed sensor is on the automatic transmission and is a 2 wire senors (red and white wire)

Czaa the repair manual is how I tracked it down. There is a two wire circuit from the speed sensor to the computer. I have replaced the wires with a twisted pair. I have found a spec. that says the vechile speed senor is good at 350 ohms. I have taken it for a test drive and the check engine light is now out and the over drive light does not flash any more. The only thing left is the wiring to the speedometer and the speedometer itself. I have to have mazda hook up the navistar tool to it and type in a code to test the speedometer it's a 50.00 test. This will hopefully prove whats wrong.

The odometer does not work. changed it out with other unit and still does not work. appears to be electrical or computer? speedo works fine

Speedometer, Odometer and Trip Odometer are driven by same circuit. Failure of Odometer and Trip Odometer suggests a circuit board fault on the instrument panel. A used instrument panel or repair of yours is probabaly best options.

The speedometer should malfunction too if speed sensor failed. If only the odometer and trip meter stopped working, it will most likely be the cluster itself. I had this problem, but since took the cluster out and give it a nice tap/knock, put it back in and it has worked since. Keep in mind that the VSS provides signal input to circuit that drives speedometer.

Instrument panel removal is not hard if you follow the shop manual instructions for trim removal. I've done it once on my 2.5TL to replace the D4 light bulb. PM your email address and I'll forward the pdf files for the procedure. The Vehicle Speed Sensor goes into the differential, and is what makes your speedometer and odometers work. If that fails, then your D4 light should start flashing, and either the speedometer will be bouncy or not work at all. Perhaps he forgot that 1Gs have a differential, so he said the tranny, but it's in the diff.

Hope helps.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

Speedometer stopped working while driving - no longer registers

This has happened on our van multiple times. Through some internet searches I have found a solution that works.

Go to your van and, with the ignition off, press and hold the trip reset button. You will see 'Sof' and perhaps some diagnostic test numbers will show up on odometer; the unit will perform a self-test, and the system will do a reset and should it should operate normally.

Cheers!

Flashing light shows a car and a keyh inside

Thank You Very Much for The Maintenance Required Light Info, as far as the flashing car w the key inside. I'm not sure what key we have? When we bought it it only came with one key so we tried to make a duplicate, which ended up not working because we later found out it needs a chip (or probably what I hear as the smart key?) If the light is supposed to be on (and normal) why does it need reset?

The Maint Reqd light blinks after 4,500 miles, and stays ON continuously after 5,000 miles. This is to remind you that you need an oil change. Give the info from you about your key, you do not have a smart key. You have a transponder key. Off topic, but, FYI, a Toyota dealer can program a transponder key for you.
Back to the Maint Reqd light. Here is how you reset it:
Turn the key on.
Make sure that the odometer reads "ODO", and displays the total mileage traveled...If it displays trip a or trip b, push the black button by the odometer to make the display read ODO.
Turn the key off.
Press and HOLD the black trip reset button until advised to release it.
Turn the key ON. (keep holding th reset button down)
Observe the odometer display.
you will see 5 dashes, 4 dashes, 3 dashes, 2 dashes, 11 dash, followed by five zeros, and the total mileage you started with will re-display.
Release the button.
Turn the key off.

Regarding the flashing light with the car & the key: This is the indicator to show potential theives thatyou vehicle has a sophosticated security system, and it CAN NOT be started by "hot-wiring" it. The flashing light is normal, and consumes no battery power. I hope that this helps you understand these two items better. Thanks for choosing FixYA, and the graciousness of a FixYa rating for my solution to you would be greatly appreciated. Glad to be of assistance; please feel free to call upon me anytime. Have a great day.

Speedometer

Aha! Found a fix, at least to my problem.

Try pressing the trip odometer reset button for 5 seconds. It will flash an error code. Then the odometer lights will flash, a bunch of error codes flash. Let it finish (my problem was that I tried to start the car the first time before it finished).
