To fix your problem, you have to turn the steering wheel either to the left or right as much as you can, then try to turn the key in the ignition. When the steering wheel locks, the key won't turn. By manually holding the steering wheel out of the lock position, the key will turn again and you're steering column will be back to normal. Also try holding the brake pedal down and turning the key and steering wheel at the same time

Ignitions locked key won't turn

Try your spare key to see if it helps any. Make sure the steering wheel is not hard locked while turning the ignition. Try gently moving the steering wheel while trying to turn the ignition. Sometimes a spray of wd-40 in the cylinder will help

Ignition lock on 1988 ford ranger will not turn

Has to be the lock cylinder, moving the wheel usually is the cure.might try some wd-40 in the "key hole" and run the key in and out a few times. sounds like a stuck tumbler. If that does not work, the lock cylinder needs changed,A breeze job if the key turns on,yours does not,so you will have to simply drive the lock pin in with a punch.

2005 Volvo S40 with key stuck in ignition. It turns off but key doesn't come, out of the steering wheel. Please advise needed, if lock change is required estimated cost of part and labour please.

Some ignition system locks will not release the key unless you push in towards the column while turning further off. It is a safety device to stop in advertent removal of the key while moving. Try that first.

I own a 2001 L200 and my key will not turn in the ignition switch, the steering wheel is locked. I purchased a new key in hopes that the old one was just worn out, but it does not work either. Ive tried...

The locking mechanism is either beneath the steering wheel or attached to the lock cylinder with a bar that slides into a slot when key is put in lock. Remove the steering column cover and see if you can spot the mechanism. I sawed one of the bars off with a hacksaw once, but it was easy to get to.

My key fits in properly but the ignition won't turn it worked fine when I drove it 8 hours ago. What could be causing it to not move at all.

Your steering may be locked. Try turning the steering wheel hard over in one direction - holding it, while turning the key, then repeat in the other direction if key still won't move.

Still not working? try a small bit of WD-40 in the ignition, running the key in and out of the lock to spread the lube about.

Ignition has locked and the key won't turn

Try spraying some kind of lubricant in the key hole (WD-40, etc.). Push the key in and out of the ignition switch several times to move the lubricant around. Then, while trying to turn the key, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth. You might have to wiggle pretty hard. If it still doesn't work, you may have to replace the ignition lock assembly.

Ignition stuck in lock position

First, lubricate the key cylinder by spraying wd-40 into it -- this usually frees it.

You can also move the steering wheel back and forth while wiggling the key -- sometimes the steering wheel lock binds the key cylinder.

If this works, you can follow up the wd-40 lubrication with graphite lock lubricant (Pep Boys).

If lubrication doesn't work, let me know, we'll go to the next step.

2003 Ford Focus ZX5 Steering Wheel column locked...key goes in but does not start the car....can't move wheel... Wheel is not straight....will not move even if totally locked....up..

All you need is two inexpensive things to fix this. 1. Hammer and 2. WD-40. First, put the key in the ignition and tap it with the hammer. (this should unlock the steering wheel and the iginition) Second, spray some WD-40 in the key opening on the ignition, then put the key in again and proceed to tap it some more with the hammer. (WHEN I SAY TAP THE HAMMER I DO NOT MEAN HIT IT WITH FULL FORCE)... Any who keep put WD-40 and tapping it until you can turn the key without the help of the hammer... (should be at least 4 times) THE PROBLEM IS THAT WITH TIME DEBRI BUILDS UP IN THE IGNITION, AND THIS CAUSES THE STEERING TO LOCK UP WHEN YOU PLACE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE HAMMER UNLOCKS THE SPRINGS IN THE IGNITION AND THE WD-40 CONVERTS THE DEBRI TO LIQUID SO IT CAN CLEAN THE IGNITION...
