Question about 2001 Ford Explorer Sport

I have a problem with a dead cylinder. the fuel injector is working and have spark at the plug but the cylinder will not fire.

It has a coil driver,or injector driver not working in the computer,or there is a valve not closing to give it combustion,have the compression checked to make sure.

First - Make sure that your spark plug wires are connected in the proper firing order, Second - Check your injectors to make sure that they are not clogged and are actually delivering fuel (Some models are not self-priming) and you might need to put a small amount of fuel in each cylinder. If none of this helps I would check the timing sequence to be certain that each cylinder is firing at top dead center!

Either has a bad injector or the wiring to that particular injector has been pinched or skinned and grounded somewhere.

Power loss and slight juking

Figure if you are running with 7 cylinders firing instead of all 8 you will have a power loss and jerking from the dead cylinder.

You could have a bad injector which a Noide tester will show or a Voltmeter will show on the power wire to #7 injector. For testing the injector, check if it has continuity so if it does get power, it will work.

Usually the Code will show from the Spark circuit failing. Either the plug, coil on plug or wiring can cause the misfire. On some engines access to the plugs is easier. You could change plug 7 to another cylinder or change coil on top to different cylinder without removing the plug. Clear the computer and see if defect moves from one cylinder to another.

If cylinder 7 is still bad with a different coil, you have eliminated the coil as a problem. Then its either the plug or the wire to it.

Engine valve timing

This is a simple engine to work on. Check for compression in the dead cylinder. If low or none, you found your problem....likely burnt exhaust valve.
If compression good, check injector for fuel spay or fuel delivery head for fuel delivery. With engine idling, crack each line nut at the fuel distributor and see if any fuel squirts out.

If so, check spark delivery by pulling lead to dead cylinder and install used/spare spark plug into plug lead. lay this against engine and run engine watching for spark at plug tip. Do not touch the plug or wire while engine running.

If no spark, check distributor cap for cracks inside. The electronics are primative on these so the above should get you close to the reason cylinder is not firing.

How to remove and clean fuel injectors

can be lots of things. (gas engine, size not STATED)
not just injectors.
here is what we do and not waste time (hard work) on them.
1: ENGINE COMPRESSION TEST. W.O.T. (or leak down tool)
2: we do the 60k tuneup now, you know, the old drill. spark plugs, cables cap and rotor, wow, spark is good and the misfire is gone..
(like the oldest story on earth, on cars)
3: fueling.
is one cylinder dead,? is one spark plug wet.
did you do the dead cylinder tests, ( shorting a spark plug or use any IR pyro temperature gun tool pointed to the exhaust ports to see if they are all hot near same?
in the olden days, finger near there , told me that, but if you slip you burn fingers , fast forward to day the tool is $15 and not burns.
i make sure all injectors are firing next.
i use a NOID lamp at each injector
i check all injector coils for 10 ohms or all the same.
i listen to each injector with my $5 stethoscope, click click.
if all that passes, i then do the injector balance test using
my $20 fuel pressure guage. (ask)

to panic an remove the injectors is covered in the FSM

the process is the same on all MPI engines.
1: pull battery neg lug.
2: discharge the fuel line pressure using FSM method.
do not do this indoors or near valuables. or near fire.
wear goggles, have fire extinguisher near by. and a blanket.
3: unplug all injectors.
4: unbolt the fuel rail.
bam, they are all free. to yank out.

good engine
good spark
good fueling, in that order or waste huge time and effort and wasted parts.

2004 GMC Envoy misfire

If you pull the #2 plug out and start the engine do you see a spark? You didn't mention if you checked the wires or not, but it could be a bad plug wire. If there is a spark, I'd try and see if the #2 injector is actually firing like you mentioned above.

Why would a cylender not fire if the plug has spark and all other cylenders are firing?

What test told you it is not firing?

You may have valve damage &

Dead cylinder number 2 bad injector number 2

use a digital volt meter,put it on the ohm scale check number 2 fuel injector should be 11 to 16 ohms if not reads zero fuel injector faulty.if numbe 2 fuel injector okay.use noid light hook it to fuel injector electrical connector with fuel injector disconnected and see if pcm is firing the fuel injector noid light should blink when cranking the engine.if light steady pcm not firing 2 fuel injector,if noid light dont light up.there is a open in the wiring connector 2 fuel injector 2. if fuel injector okay,check spark plug, carbon foul you have a bad ignition coil or wire if you see oil on spark plug you have worn piston ring or leaking valve guides allowing oil to foul out spark a compression test check compression to see condition of the cylinder.

Honda Accord one cylinder not firing

The cylinder is not getting fuel, spark or compression. You have already checked for spark on that cable and it appears to be good. Pull the spark plug and see if it is damaged. You can also switch spark plug and cable to another cylinder and see if the miss travels with the plug and or cable. If so, you'll know its the spark plug/cable that is bad.

You can check for fuel by listening to the fuel injector to see if it clicks. Use an automotive stethoscope or a long screwdriver--put the metal end of the screwdriver on the injector and the other end against your ear and listen to the injector while the engine is cranking or running. You should hear it click for each time it pulses fuel.

If both fuel and spark are good, then you are probably missing compression in that cylinder. You (or a mechanic) will need to pull all the spark plugs and do a engine compression test with a compression test/gage set. Lots of things can lead to poor or zero compression including: broken piston rings, burned/stuck/broken valves, cracked cylinder head or engine block, cracked pistons,etc.

Because one cylinder is "dead", the engine has to work extra hard to start and run against a cylinder that is dragging it down. If you find low/no compression in that cylinder, you will probably have to remove the cylinder head to correct it. A big expensive job. It may be cost effective to replace the whole engine with a rebuilt one.
