Not having an air flow sensor, will it damage the engine if it is driven?

You wont be able to drive the truck without the MAF sensor. And yes it can cause damage to the exhaust system.

I don't think it will damage the engine, but it might damage other sensors, if not the main computor, and the truck may not run right.
Kind of risky to run without it.

Multiple misfires can be caused by a few different things , intake manifold vacuum leaks , low fuel pressure , basic things like plug wires an spark plugs needing to be changed if hasn't been done already . How many miles on the vehicle ? If over 100,000 K timing chain an gear wear can also cause this . The powertrain control module (PCM) uses information from the ignition control (IC) module and the camshaft position (CMP) sensor in order to determine when an engine misfire is occurring. By monitoring the variations in the crankshaft rotation speed for each cylinder the PCM is able to detect individual misfire events. A misfire rate that is high enough can cause the three-way catalytic converter to overheat under certain conditions. The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) will flash ON and OFF when the conditions for 3-way catalytic converter overheating are present.
If the misfire is random, check for the following conditions:

System grounds


Ensure all connections are clean and properly tightened.

Mass air flow sensor


A mass air flow (MAF) sensor output that causes the PCM to sense a lower than normal air flow will cause a lean condition. Try operating the vehicle within the Failure Records conditions with the MAF sensor disconnected. If the lean or misfiring condition is not present with the MAF sensor disconnected, replace the Mass Airflow Sensor Replacement .

Damaged accessory drive belt or driven accessory


A damaged serpentine belt or belt driven accessory can cause engine load variations sufficient to set a misfire DTC.

Air induction system


Vacuum leaks that cause intake air to bypass the MAF sensor will cause a lean condition. Check for disconnected or damaged vacuum hoses, incorrectly installed or malfunctioning crankcase ventilation valve, or for vacuum leaks at the throttle body, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, and intake manifold mounting surfaces.

Perform a fuel system pressure test. A malfunctioning fuel pump, a plugged filter, or a malfunctioning fuel system pressure regulator will contribute to a lean condition. Refer to Fuel System Diagnosis .

Check for leaking valve, adapter, or feed pipes which will contribute to a lean condition or excessive EGR flow.

Extended idle


Excessive Open Loop operation caused by extended idling or short trip driving may leave deposits on the heated oxygen sensors. The deposits cause oxygen sensors to respond slowly to exhaust oxygen content, affecting fuel control and causing a misfire to be indicated at idle. This condition is not permanent. To determine if this condition is causing the DTC P0300 to set, review the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for DTC P0300. If the DTC P0300 occurs at high engine speeds, the condition described above did not cause the DTC to set. If the DTC P0300 occurs at idle or very low engine speeds and at engine coolant temperatures below 80?°C (176?°F), the condition described above is very likely the cause of the DTC to set. The deposits on the heated oxygen sensors can be eliminated by operating the vehicle fully warm at mass air flows above 15 g/s.

I have p 1121 and a P 0401 codes on my 1998 ford windstar. are these related? what can I check? replaced the mass airflow sensor recently.

Are there any cracks in the rubber hose from air cleaner to throttle body ! That could cause the P1121 air entering after mass air flow sensor !
P1121 - Throttle Position (TP) Sensor Inconsistent with MAF Sensor The PCM monitors a vehicle operation rationality check by comparing sensed throttle position to mass air flow readings. If during key ON engine running self-test the comparison of the TP sensor and MAF sensor readings are not consistent with calibrated load values, the test fails and a diagnostic trouble code is stored in continuous memory.
  • Air leak between MAF sensor and throttle body
  • TP sensor not seated properly
  • Damaged TP sensor
  • Damaged MAF sensor
Drive vehicle and exercise throttle and TP sensor in all gears. A TP PID (TP V PID) less than 4.82 % (0.24 volt) with a LOAD PID greater than 55% or a TP V PID greater than 49.05% (2.44 volts) with a LOAD PID less than 30% indicates a hard fault. P0401 - EGR Flow Insufficient Detected The EGR system is monitored during steady state driving conditions while the EGR is commanded on. The test fails when the signal from the DPF EGR sensor indicates that EGR flow is less than the desired minimum.

Perform KOER self-test and look for DTC P1408 as an indication of a hard fault. If P1408 is not present, look for contamination, restrictions, leaks, and intermittents

DTC P1309 - Misfire Monitor Disabled

Several possible causes there, check ans test...
- CMP (Camshaft Position) sensor connector is damaged (check pins for damage, and for moisture)
- CMP (Camshaft Position) sensor has failed
- CKP (Crankshaft Position), ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) or MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor may be out-of-calibration
- CKP (Crankshaft Position), ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) or MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor may have failed
- PCM (Powetrain Control Module) has failed.

P0113 Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Circuit High Input Indicates the sensor signal is greater than Self-Test maximum. The IAT sensor maximum is 4.6 volts or -50 C (-58 F). Possible causes are Open circuit in harness, Sensor signal short to power, Damaged Sensor, Improper harness connection, Damaged PCM

P0102 Mas Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input, The MAF sensor circuit is monitored by the PCM for low air flow (or voltage) input through the comprehensive component monitor (CCM) If during key ON engine running the air flow (or voltage) changes below a minimum calibrated limit, the test fails. Hey have you tried disconnecting and re connecting the battery? my mitsi carisma startd doing that so i rang up dealer and aparently they do it when the computer thinks there is something wrong with the engine, so it enters slow mode (or turtle mode or something) so that minimal damage is done while you drive it slowly to yr mechanic. Could be complettly wrong tho. Good luck.

P0102 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input
The MAF sensor circuit is monitored by the PCM for low air flow (or voltage) input through the comprehensive component monitor (CCM). If during key ON engine running the air flow (or voltage) changes below a minimum calibrated limit, the test fails. MAF sensor disconnected
MAF circuit open to PCM
VPWR open to MAF sensor
PWR GND open to MAF sensor
MAF RTN circuit open to PCM
MAF circuit shorted to GND
Intake air leak (near MAF sensor)
A closed throttle indication [throttle position (TP) sensor system]
Damaged MAF sensor
Damaged PCM
A MAF V PID (MAF PID) reading less than 0.23 volts (Refer to equivalent grams/second chart in GO to Pinpoint Test DC ) in continuous memory or key ON and engine running indicates a hard fault.

oh dear, its still that mass air flow sensor playing up, there very easy to damage just one tuch will do it, try another one but be very jentel when you fit it

Engine light on 3 codes in system


The lean running codes are related to the p-1000 code...

Running lean on bank 1 and bank 2 means your oxygen sensors sense too much oxygen in your exhaust flow. This means either your engine is getting unmetered air (air that the engine does not know is coming in, therefore does not send fuel to compensate for...) (air that your mass air flow sensor does not see). You could have either a bad mass air flow (MAF) sensor (in the intake piping after the filter; this sensor tells your engine how much air it's taking in, so it can send the right amount of fuel through the injectors to properly burn with the air available with as little emissions as possible), or you could also have a cracked/broken intake piping after this sensor which lets air in the intake that the sensor does not measure... A large vacuum leak could also let unmetered air in the engine.

Or... Another possibility here would be low fuel pressure (bad fuel pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, fuel leak), as not enough fuel for the air would also cause the same lean condition.

It could be that some oxygen sensors are bad...

These conditions are hard to pinpoint exactly unless you have a scanner that can read sensor data (MAF Flow, fuel pressure, oxygen sensor values)...

The first thing I'd do would be to check for cracks or damage in the intake piping... If there is none, then it might be a low fuel pressure issue, or sensor problems...

Mass air flow sensor is out how can i fix the problem without having to replace the mass air flow sensor,or how can I make the car give more horsepower with out damaging my motor


My check engine light came on and the code came back saying that the mass air flow sensor was out. All I did was change the air filter even though I really didn't think it needed it, the light went off and has not come back on yet. Knock on wood!
