My 02 jetta tdi stalled on the highway in the 4th gear and it felt as it lost all the power, when i tried to reduce3 the gear it kept loosing power and it eventually came to a stop after a series of jittery motions and a fair amount of smoge from the tail pipe. the tank was half full and the oil was checked.

Have the Catilytic convertor checked out. When the engine is cold, try and start it again.Let it idle for 10 minutes. It should stall out or run very bad if the convertor is the problem. Also the shell of the convertor will get red in color as well if it is plugged up

Don't know much about VW but if it's fine, and it doesn't happen again I wouldn't worry about it. If it does try resetting the ECU by removing the battery terminals and touching the positive lead(red wire) to the negative battery post. It might spark a little, this is just the capacitors discharging, resetting your ECU and starting over. It's like restarting your personal computer
