are there screws on the back side of the steering wheel?

  • stilgar2 May 15, 2010

there are 2 screws that seem to hold just a circular dust cover that is about 3 1\2 inches wide. 1 single piece of plastic. when I removed them it did not seem to loosen or effect the cap at all. i have the bottom half of the steering column exposed and I have disabled the airbag module.

  • stilgar2 May 15, 2010

just to clarify, my original problem is the horn does not work with the tires pointing straight, but if you turn them 10 to 15 degrees either direction the horn works fine. turn the tires back to a straight line and the horn does not work. so i am assuming it is a problem within the steering wheel assembly. I just can't get to it. every manual I have referenced just says to remove cap...... but it does not tell you how.

I'm assuming this cap is covering the center of the steering wheel. is there a hidden screw holding the cap? you may just not be using enough force. i'm sorry i can't be of more help. a friend of mine has a similar model but he won't be around until monday. i'll have a chance to look at it then and try to get back to you.

The steering wheel lock pin is probably not falling into place. Try some lock lubricant and jiggle the wheel back and forth a little bit. If that does not do it, you will have to take out the lock tumbler and free-up / lubricate the steering column lock pin mechanism.

Horn wiring diagrams

Well, you should have two horns - one above each wheel well inside the front fenders. Since replacing the relay didn't fix the problem, the most probable cause is the horn switch in the steering wheel assembly, although wiring under the hood could also be a problem as contacts at the horns are prone to corrosion. You could check the horns by connecting 12V to one of them, but because of the airbag in the steering wheel, you should leave pulling the steering wheel apart to a certified shop.

WOW, listen under the steer wheel is a panel
drop it down on the panels left side as it comes down is a small black plastic box left of the diagnosis jack with I don't know 5 or 6 wires going to it, wires come from the left hand corner above the emer brake pedal. Plugged in lights on ,,out lights off. Then have the unit tested. or replace. If there was ever a power surge the caps could have blown.

I have a 1998 Plymonth Grand Voyager and my horn doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Check your fuse box and see if there is a fuse for the horn. Check it with a continuity tester. If there is no specific fuse for the horn then use the one for the headlights or parking lights.

If all the fuses are good, locate the horn under the hood near the front of the car. Connect cables to the ground of your car and to the ground of your horn, then connect the red cable to the red battery connection and power side of your horn. If the horn makes noise it is good, If not it needs to be replace.

If the horn is good, then it may be wiring or the button on the steering wheel. Follow the wiring and check for continuity using a continuity checker or meter with the battery disconnected. If that is good then it is most likely the button on your steering wheel. It is best to have a tech replace it as the airbag is also in the steering wheel.

1997 GMC Sierra the steering wheel is locked

If you remove the air bag you must disconnect the battery first and wait 5 miunts to work on it. if the tumbler is damaged you will need to remove the horn button then the or the air bag then remove 3 screws that hold the horn assembly then remove the steering wheel nut then you will have to rent a steering wheel puller pull the steering wheel off then you can get to the tumbeler assembly, one there remove one screw that holds key lock assembly in place then with a flat tip screw driver see if you can turn the slot in the stering wheel, if you can turn it then there is a problem with the tumbler assembly and you can by one at any auto parts store with 2 keys for about $15.00 if it still will not turn then the two nuts that hold the steering whel on will have to be dropped then the steering wheel will have to be lowerered and the clip for the gear shift string has to be removed then drop the steering wheel down and look at the rod tthat operates the key switch. Is the rod bent? straighten it and try turning it again, does it turn? if yes you found the problem if not you can luberacate the switch on the steering wheel and see if you can get it to free up once it does put it back together like you took it apart, if it won't turn you will have to replace the strat switch on the steering cloumbe. if you need help just reply to this answer and I will get back to you thanks for using fix-ya.

Try checking the fuse, or horn switch on the steering wheel. Try a 12v source right at the horn with the horn wiring unhooked.

1994 gmc jimmy steering wheel removal

Gently pop off the horn cap / cover.

There will be a short wire attached, so be careful not to pull it too hard.

You will see the wire going into the metal frame of the steering wheel.

The wire will go into a "sleeve". Push the sleeve in, and turn slightly counter-clockwise to unlock the connector. The horn will beep a few times as you pull the wire out, just to warn you :)

You will now need a steering wheel puller. These can be bought for about $10 at any auto parts store.

Once the wheel itself is off, you will see a black plastic disk. remove it. Now you will see a metal disk with notches in it (this is what locks the steering wheel when you turn the key off). You may want to get someone for assistance for this one, as there is a pretty stiff spring behind the disc, so use caution. You will need to push the disc towards the dash and remove the retainer clip.

Once that is off, you will see the white turn signal switch. Remove the hazard switch button first, then the turn signal lever retaing screw (be careful if it has cruise control, as the wires are thin and delicate), then remove the 3 phillips head screws holding the actual switch on. Let the switch hang out of the way.

Now, you'll see the lock cylinder retaining screw. This is where you may have a problem if you don't have a key.

After removing the screw, you MUST turn the ignition switch to the "run" position and pull out the assembly.
