Most common is the thermostat, especially if it's boiling over.
You can check the fan by disconnecting the wire connector from the fan and use 2 jumper wires direct from the battery and just touch the prongs on the fan where the wire was connected, if you get a spark, switch the wires.
If the fan comes on, then the coolant sensor is bad.If it doesn't come on, the fan is bad.
Could also be a clogged radiator, but do the thermostat first.
