Question about 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Excesive noise from front end sounds like transmition, originaly I thought the problem was just some new all season tires I had bought but it now sounds louder and the noise changes if I am in a turn or straight ahead. I dont know how to check my transmition fluid because I dont see any dipstick but there appears to be a red cap of some sort on the top of the transmition but I didn't want to attempt to remove it uless I knew what it was.

It sounds more like a wheel bearing because the sound changes when you turn. i would check this first. could be cheaper. how many miles on the car?

Testimonial: "I had thought of a bearng but it seems too well balanced, exact same sound from both sides regardless its not something I can fix myself in thee driveway. I guess I had better get a professional to look at it. Thanks"

What could be causing clunking in rear end?

From previous repairs at work for similar complaints, I believe the noise is comming from your strut mounts. These are the plates that mount on the top of the struts. It is a metal plate with a rubber insulator, the rubber tends to weaken over time and allows excesive movement.

Check the front end for bad suspension parts, Upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, pittman and idler arms, drag link. If you can move any of them by hand, they need to be replaced. Ifyour front end is tight you will have to replace the steering box.
