I don't know what to look for. This happend about 2 years ago after i jump started another car. I disconnected the neg battery lead. That didnt seem to do anything. After about 6 days it started working normal again and hasnt been an issue till this week. Not sure what is going on. Maybe the computer needs to be reset. The horn works the cc light works. It just wont engage. Don't know where to look for vacume leaks but I don't hear anything when I have the hood up. Not sure exactly where to look for the cc on the break or gas pedel.

    Hi

Sorry for the delay. I looked under the hood where the cable attach to the throttle body. ( i believe its the throttle body ) 1 is a spring. The other is a piece of plastic about 6 inches long. At the end of that is a half circle that connect to the throttle body. That was detached. I snapped it back in place. The cruise control worked again but it now is sticking. I noticed there is about a half inch of play on the plastic piece. Does that need to be cleaned? Does that need to be replaced? Can you replace just the end piece or does it have to be the whole cable? I will take a picture of it and post it later today.

Sorry for the delay. I looked under the hood and saw 2 cables. One with a spring that connects the the throttle body ( I believe its the throttle body ) one that is a 6 inch piece of plastic with a half circle on the end that snaps onto the throttle body. That was disconnected. I snapped it back into place and my cruise control worked again but now at times the accerator is sticking. I looked under the hood and the plastic piece was stuck. There is about half an inch play on that piece. Does that piece need to be replaced? Do you have to replace the whole cable? Can it be cleaned? I will take a picture and post it later today.

Best thing to do is get a scanner reading to see if anything is showing to be defective. but first do a visual inspection for any problems around the cruise control. do you know what to look for? please reply

the cruise control is attached to the same place that moves when you press the gas pedal. open the hood and have someone press the pedal. the part that moves will have two leads attached to it. One is to the cruise control. follow the lines and you will find it.there will be connections there. look for anything unusual. maybe try an auto parts store to see if they can use a scanner on your car and see if there are any codes. i will watch for a reply. thanks for using fixya

98 maxima the cruise control light comes on but does not engage

Today, I found a "Second Switch". The brake pedal has the switch for the ASCD and the brake lights (I knew this but thought it didn't matter because of my trouble shooting procedures mentioned above). I also never really looked for it as its behind the steering column (It's a tight fit under the dash!). Today, I looked at it. SURE ENOUGH, there's another rubber stopper that had broken out. I got another dime and taped it up...and BOOM! Cruise Control!

Cruise control lights up on dash but does not engage

Check for applicable trouble codes, relating to cruise, see if that points us in the right direction?
Make sure the brake lites, work.
Other than that, about all I can tell you is to look up the wiring diagram for cruise control, check voltage and ground circuits.

Cruise control trouble shooting

The cruise control depends upon input from the speed sensor to determine when to engage. The sensor may be erratic.

U need a new dealer. What is he there for? Aren't they supposed to be the experts on your car? If your cruise control does not work properly doesn't it make sense to trouble shoot or replace the module that controls that aspect of your car?

How to fix cruise control

Cruise controls can cease to engage if the clutch or brake light cruise switch are out of adjustment. If this happens, try placing you foot under the clutch pedal (if equipped) and lift up on it (toward you) and hold it while engaging the cruise. If it now works, it will likely cut out when you remove your foot from under the pedal. Check the brake pedal in an identical fashion. Adjusting the switch at the pedals can often solve he problem. Some vehicles (Honda, Acura, Ford, to name a few) have a plastic insert that mounts in the pedal arm which presses against the switch. These can become brittle and fracture into pieces. My Acura has little pieces of blue plastic on the floorboard around the brake pedal one afternoon and I noticed the cruise didn't work. It was the pieces of the insert that had come to pieces preventing the cruise from coming on. I replaced the insert and no more problem with the cruise.

My cruise control doesnt work. could it b a fuse out?

CRUISE CONTROL PROBLEMS CAN BE CAUSED BY FUSE OR FAULTY BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH OR BLOWED FUSE TO BRAKE SWITCH.YOUR CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH COULD BE FAULTY.BEST TO TAKE CAR TO DEALERSHIP LET THEM HOOK CAR. TO DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT.BECAUSE CRUISE CONTROL IS ELECTRONIC AND PCM CONTROL.THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM USES INPUTS FROM VSS SENSOR .SO IT WOULD BE HARD TO FIX AT HOME YOU NEED EQUIPMENT TO FIX AND TROUBLE SHOOT.

Cruise control won't engage

most likely the clock spring is not the problem because when u push the button the dash light cruise comes on.wich means that you do not have an open circuit.with a light tester check to see if you are getting power to the cruise control servo.if you are then replace it.if no power you will need a new cruise control stick on the steering column.
