First off this is a catastrophic problem. One or more cylinders will run hot due to a lean fuel mix. and damage the valves.

If the cost is the problem get a second opinion.

Is it worth it?:
900. is about 3 car payments. or a trade in for car payments four 5 years.

-Just some thoughts to help guide you to a solution.

NOTE: We just spent 1k on a 2003 kia with over 100k and i was glad to do it.

Common problem with that motor is the intake gaskets fail. It could be that but in reality it sounds like head gaskets are gone

pull your oil dipstick and look for water in oil if it is, you will need to replace the lower intake gasket if this a 3.1 liter engine.

1999 Pontiac Grand Am with "lower intake leak"...What does this mean specifically? Would this mean the intake for the radiator, gasket, or valve?

Usually intake has to do with the induction system, as in intake manifold , The intake manifold can have several types of leaks, the intake can have a vacuum leak, oil leak, coolant leak or a combination of any of the before mentioned....hope this helps,

Need head bolt, intake upper and lower and rocker arm torque lbs.

Head bolts--------- 22 ft lbs.
Intake upper------ 18 ft lbs.
Intake lower------- 10 ft lbs. Tighten vertical bolts first, the diagonal bolts, failure to do this will result in an oil leak.
As far as the rocker arm bolts, they have to be adjusted with the valves closed, tighten down just enough to turn the push rods with your fingers with slight tension.
This is out of a Technical Specifications Manual.
