Question about Ford Escort

1 Answer

I just bought a 2000 ZX2 5 speed manual trans and am noticing that the A/C works when you first start the car, but quickly stops cooling within 5 to 10 minutes. Also, the car starts sputtering and bucking as I shift in 2nd and 3rd gears. The previous owner stated he just got a tune up done the week before I purchased the car. Please advise

Cooling issue is most likely a low freon issue. When the low side gets low pressure it will shut off. Also if the drier is full of moisture from a small leak (from low pressure) then it will basically be an ice block.
The low idle in the car may be off if it bucks in 2nd and 3rd because unlike first you are not on the gas. These gears require the most power because of the climbing in speed issue. You didnt state you rpms for idle but I am guessing they are in the 600 and lower range.
Might check the plugs for proper gap, make sure coil is new as just because he did a tune up there had to be a reason for him to unload the car.
Good Luck

I have a 2000 300M. The car makes a small jerking motion just before I am come to a complete stop. It's as if the transmission is shifting down or something. It's not really that noticeable but...

Check the fluid levels FIRST And when doing so, SMELL the trans dipstick. Does it smell burnt? is the trans fluid brown or emerald green? Green is good, brown is BAD. Have you had the trans fluid and filter changed? That would be number one on my list. If it continues, perhaps a trans tune up at a local trans shop might help. They can also diagnose any potential issues before they get worse. My '96 has always downshifted ******* a slow stop, but very infrequently.

2000 626 2.0 manual trans. what is the difference in a engine that has a auto trans and one that has a manual trans. looking to replace my engine with manual trans but most are for automatic trans and some...

There are many differences, starting with your wiring harness, ecu computer, and it goes on from there.
Manual: There are a set # of gears (usually 4-6) and you switch between them as required.
Automatic: Again a set # of gears (usually 3-5), the transmission switches them automatically, based on current speed and other variables
For an manual you'll need to hook up a tachometer which cues you when the best time to shift is.

Manually shift thru all gears up & down the scale. Try adding Motorcraft Additive Friction Modifier, available from Ford parts dept. This REALLY STINKS!!! Don't get any on you. Pour into trans fluid. Drive a few miles shifting manually thruthe gears, then do a normal start stop drive several times. This will luburcate trans, normally used for differential but has worked in automatic transmissions of all makes for years. Otherwise mechanical problem for transmission repair facility.

When driving at 45-55mph the "d" on the dash that indicates the gearshift is in drive will suddenly dissapear. This is the indication that when I come to a stop light the transmission will now slip trying...

It's possible there is an electronic fault or a more serious internal mechanical condition causing the transmission to slip as it warms up. After parking for a bit the transmission cools down and often they will work better for a while until they warm up again. To start with I would have the transmission controller checked to see if there are any service codes and then have it test driven by a transmission specialist when the problem is occuring to get his opinion on it. It does sound a lot like a slipping clutch pack from what you describe however which would require the transmission to be removed to fix the problem. Good luck and hope this helps out a bit!

1999 Grand Voyager transmission not shifting into high gear

Do yourself a favor & get it scanned at transmission shop, or dealer & fixed as needed,(within reason) . Delaying it could cost lots of money. A rebuilt is about $1500-$2000.
