Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

Driving on the highway first thing I notice was the battery light flickering. Shortly following was my tachometer, it registered 0. Then my radio started to fade and with low volume and static and that was followed by the car loosing power when I press the excelerator. By the time I got to my destination my car could barley pull. Could this be an alternator problem?

I do accept this solution but, Are there any other causes for the car to act this way besides battery and alternator. If so what can I look for?

Thank you problem solved! It was the alternator.

Hi! Yes it can be an alternator problem, but I suggest that you have a battery check too for it may be faulty and not taking the charge from the alternator. This two needs an urgent attention and replace if necessary. HOpe this helps and have a good one!

It can be the ignition coil, if the ignition coil is too hot it can make your car stall but will surely start when its cool down.

Radio changing stations as well as tachometer at 0 or moving random while driving.

No, you have two separate issues. The tach is run by a logic chip in the instrument panel. This chip also runs other things, like the speedometer. So you have a bad solder joint on the tach motor(easy fix after the IP is out). The radio changing stations is because the button is stuck or moisture in the button. These aren't hard to replace either. You spend more time dismantling the radio than fixing the problem. Is the radio worth it?

Could be faulty Camshaft Position Sensor. Either way it sounds like bad sensor. It may also be faulty coil packs. You should remove one plug at a time, replug it into the wire, and lay across motor and have someone else turn the motor over to see if you have any spark. If no spark in one or two cylinders, then coil pack will need replacement. If spark is good, then check fuel pressure to make sure engine is getting fuel to all cylinders. If the engine is getting fuel, then it must be a sensor.

2003 Pathfinder LE AT Oil Brake and battery light flicker

.I spent a lot of time and head scratching over the exact same problem ...YOU NEED A NEW REGULATOR (it is in the alternator).repair options are ;replace voltage regulator only , rebuild complete alternator , replace alternator with a rebuilt one , or replace alternator with a new one
The clue was getting diff. readings on your volt meter ....mine would spike up to 18 volts but you have to put your volt meter on and get yourself a cup of coffee (or a beer) and stare at your meter for atleast 15 minuits after the engine is heated up ....

GET YOUR BATTERY LOAD TESTED ALONG WITH YOUR ALTERNATOR TESTED FOR OHMS VALUES AT THE REGULATOR. ALSO MEASURE THE VOLTAGE WITH ALL LIGHTS, AC, RADIO ON. SHOULD BE THE SAME AS BATTERY OUTPUT.

Tachometer failing. Instrument panel short?

A 'short' means a blown fuse at least or smoke. I would replace the blown bulb and check the connectors.

My 2002 Honda Civic starts - but slowly and the lights flicker

Well it absolutely sounds like an alternator issue. But i noticed you said "in the rain" correct? See this is where it gets tricky for most folks. But ill tell ya how to resolve this, if you arent having problems now things are gonna be just fine. I mean if you got up the next morning and th ecar did normal, then evidentally an electrical component had some moisture in it but has dried out now,so if it was the alternator the problem would only worsen, and within a few days your battery would fail. So I think you will be just fine

Hi, Did you notice the motor actually reving higher when the tachometer was reading a higher rpm.. If it was it could be your transmission slipping.. Set your cruise control and listen to your motor while the tachometer starts moving erratically.. Good Luck
