Question about 1993 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes Benz 300 Class

1 Answer

Have a 93 300SE Benz, 125K runs good looks great (Black w/sil inter). But it probably will cost more to fix/restore it then it is worth. So do I sell it locally, donate it and write it off for taxes or what? I want to get a newer car. Please advise, Thanks?

Tough choice but at the moment without a car payment, unless you have a bundle of cash repairing an old car is still more cost effective with high gas prices than buying a new car or any car with a payment. If you pay say 200 dollars a month in a car payment you could use that to fix your car. If you just need a reason to get rid of it, put up a for sale sign get some cash and find something newer.

Car lost power uphill with air on and was hard to start once. blue exhaust smoke when reved up otherwise runs good

Blue smoke is not good!! Piston rings are bad or valves. On a Mercedes it will cost you more than the car is worth at this point. Unless you have a sentimental attachment to the car and really really want to keep it., I would get rid of it. 123,000 mile is a great life for a 1989.

The 1999 VW Bug I own kept overheating. It won't hold compression to keep running. Mechanic says needs new engine. Worth it to fix?

I kind of depends on how you feel about it-did he tell you what the compression readings were? Are they all low, or just one cylinder? Is the reason top end (valves) or rings (bottom end)-he should know these numbers and why if he is recommending engine replacement. you don't say how many miles, and you know the car's maintenance history, but if regular oil changes have not been done, if it has been badly overheated, it may be the only thing you can do. A second opinion never hurts especially if he cannot say what compression numbers are, or if the valves or rings are the cause of low compression.

And it depends on the cost-a used engine can be installed, but you have to decide if it is worth the cost of the engine, installation and down time. Consider the value of your car-you can go onto used car websites and get a valuation number for your car by plugging in condition, miles, etc to determine it's worth. Subtract from that number the cost of installing a new engine and you have an idea of what your car is worth right now-probably not alot as I'd guess the cost of a used engine and installation would run from a low of $1200 to as much as $2000 and your car is worth about $3-3500. You could buy an inexpensive car to get you by while you look for a good used engine, and locate a shop to do the install, then sell the beater car when you are back on the road with your Beetle.

My transmission is about to go.... should I fix it or junk it? 247,000 miles a great little car

It depends on the actual cost to get it repaired. I'm a firm believer in keeping it in service if it is reasonable to do so. It's worth about 300 as junk and about 750 if you sell it running and working. If the transmission is going to cost more than about 1100 to repair you can't really expect to get that much more value out of the vehicle as far as use. If it is a choice between spending a little more to get the transmission repaired and being on foot then it is worth it if you feel it is. Keep in mind that you are well beyond the expected life span of the vehicle. If everything else works well and there are no signs of other mechanical problems I would probably repair it and continue to use it. it should still be getting about 25 to 28 mpg so it isn't that far off of what a new vehicle will give you in MPG and will certainly save money in the long run overall. If your getting low mileage and having other problems it may be a good idea to sell now and get away from it before it becomes a money pit.

Hi I have a 1981 280se w126 and it has severe rust in the lip of the boot/trunk (big holes)....is this expensive to fix/replace? Also the metal panel underneath that area on the inside of the trunk is...

Considering your car is only worth $5,000 in great shape, I don't think it is worth repairing a rusted out frame and under body. If it was a 72, I would say yes, but 81, ahh, My brother used to restore cars, I saw what he went through, buying and selling his cars, He stopped buying rust buckets, if they had one spec of rust, he didn't touch it, there are plenty of rust free cars out there, And repairing rust is a nightmare, your Mercedes is not like a Chevy where they have every panel in stock ready to weld in, You would need to hire a body man full time for a year to get those panels fixed back up, and get it done on the frame??? Forget it, the frame is probably shot. Painting the undercarriage will take most of your money, you will never get it back out of the car. Hope this helps.

My Acura RS hatchback, standard has a complete rusted fuel line. Is it worth it to replace it? There are 334000 miles on her and other than the rusted fuel lines, she runs GREAT. Help!

My rule of thumb has always been to consider replacement cost. What could you sell your Integra for plus the cost of repairing the fuel lines. Take that as what can you buy, and chances are what you bough could have a serious problem. Almost always better off with what you know unless the cost of repair is too great.

Hope this helps you make up your mind.
Rich.
