Question about 1996 Dodge Stratus

Bad axle i think

When i jack my car up with both front wheels off the ground i put the car in drive. only the right wheel turns at the normal RPMs the driver one doesn't only when i bring the RPMs up further but then it starts to clicking what could cause this.

The one axle that is clicking or thumping needs a universal joint. it can be replaced or the whole axle replaced as one piece.

Does the car have a limited slip diff ? if it doesn't then what you are describing is quite normal.

Warn Hubs Installation
A truck or SUV with a four-wheel drive suspension uses locking hubs on the front wheels to engage or disengage the front axle shafts from the hubs. This way, you can drive the truck normally with just rear-wheel drive, or engage four-wheel drive mode when you want to drive off-road. These hubs can wear out, and one improvement is to install a set of Warn hubs. Installing a set of Warn hubs takes about an hour.
1.Park the truck and put on the parking brake. Lift the front of the truck with the jack and put the jack stands under the front axle. Take off the front wheels with the tire iron and put them to the side.
2.Disengage the locking hubs using your hands by turning the knob on the hubs. Remove the snap rings holding the hub locks in place with the snap-ring pliers. Pull the hub off the axle.
3.Install the lock ring wheel from the Warn hub kit in the axle with the factory snap ring and the snap-ring pliers.
4.Make sure the Warn locking cap dial is turned to the "Free' position. Install the locking cap onto the lock ring wheel and hub body with a hex-head key. Reinstall the front wheels with the tire iron and lower the vehicle off the jack stands with the jack.

Noise coming from front end while moving. the faster you go, the loader it gets. growling noise. how to check front wheel brgs, and cv joints


This sounds very familra, the problem sounds like a bad wheel bearing, the hard part is locating the bad one, you will need to drive it and try to locate if its in the front or rear. the most common is the front, you can try and jack up the front of the car with both front wheels off the ground and grab each wheel top and bottom and see if there are loose when you try to move it, sometimes a bad wheel bearing wheel have looseness to it and sometimes not. if the wheel is not loose then the next step would be to run the front wheels in drive wheels off the ground and listen for the loud wheel and that will be the bad one, to replace it you will need to remove the wheel then the brake caliper and the rotor. next locate the three bolts in the rear and remove them, next remove the center axle nut on the front of the wheel for the axle. next unplug connector to abs if car has abs, next hammer hub off spindle, it may be frozen on so beat the top and bottom to free it, then remove it and install new one. heres a few diagram to help you out, hope this is helpful, good day.johnjohn2_98.jpg

I snapped the LHF stub axle, i did notice that when i had my truck off the ground and put it in gear the rear wheels didnt turn, mine is a full time 4x4 so im thinking the transfer case is shot, is there...


yes exactly that, you can jack the front wheels clear of the ground. Put the front wheels on stands and take the rear tailshaft off at the gear box end, start it up put in both 1st and reverse and look underneath to see weather the uni-joint at the gearbox is spinning. It could well possibly be that you have been just driving around in front-wheel drive with the rear wheels doing very little!

4wheel drive wont engage


First, start checking the fuses an there is also an electrial activaced switch at the transmission or transfer case that may be bad.

95-96
Your control knob should say 2wd, 4auto, 4low.

First, we need to narrow it down to a transfer case issue, or a front axle issue.
Step 1) Jack up the front end and place it securely on jack stands.
Step 2) Verify that the front driveshaft turns by hand. When turning the front driveshaft by hand, the front wheels may or may not turn. Do not be alarmed if they don't turn. This is normal for your vehicle.
Step 3) Start the vehicle and let it idle. Place your foot firmly on the brakes, place the transmission in NEUTRAL, engage 4low, then place the vehicle back in park. DO NOT ENGAGE ANY GEAR!! The lurch as the transmission engages could cause the vehicle to lurch and potentially fall off the jack stands.**If you can turn the front driveshaft, the transfer case is not locking. This could be due to a mechanical issue with the transfer case itself, or an electrical gremlin with the control system. Start a new thread with the results of your checks, and we'll go from there.
**If the front driveshaft does not turn, the transfer case is locking properly and we need to continue searching.
Step 4) With the front wheels in the air, engine idling in PARK, spin one front wheel. The other wheel should spin the opposite direction. If both wheels spin in opposite directions, then the front axle *should* be properly engaged. Take it for a test drive (after safely lowering it to the ground, of course). If the front wheels do not spin in opposite directions, there is a problem with the front axle. This could be due to a mechanical problem with the diff, or a failure of the center axle disconnect to engage the passenger side axle shaft. Start a new thread with the results of your checks, and we'll go from there.

Troubleshooting the CAD on a 95-96 is a bit more involved than I want to get into here, and the problems can vary widely. This'll get you started.


97-01 4-door and 96-00 Sports
Your control knob should say 4auto, 4high, 4low.
First, we need to narrow it down to a transfer case issue, or a front axle issue.

Step 1) Jack up the front end and place it securely on jack stands.

Step 2) Verify that the front driveshaft turns by hand. When turning the front driveshaft by hand, the front wheels should turn. (If only one turns, don't be alarmed. One wheel sometimes has more resistance in the brakes, bearings, or CV joints. This is normal)
Step 3) Start the vehicle and let it idle in PARK. Engage 4high. DO NOT PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR!!! Crawl underneath and see if you can turn the front driveshaft.
**If you can turn the front driveshaft, the transfer case is not locking. This could be due to a mechanical issue with the transfer case itself, or an electrical gremlin with the control system. Start a new thread with the results of your checks, and we'll go from there.
**If the front driveshaft does not turn, the transfer case is locking properly and we need to continue searching.

'01-'03 Sport and '01-'05 Sport Trac
Your control knob should say 2wd, 4high, 4low

The transfer case in these trucks functions essentially like the 1st-gens' 13-54 t-case. (i.e. it uses a lockup collar engaged by the transfer case shift motor) The troubleshooting procedure is very similar, but you don't need to worry about hubs or center-axle disconnects engaging.

Step 1) Jack up the front end and place it securely on jack stands.
Step 2) Verify that the front driveshaft turns by hand. When turning the front driveshaft by hand, the front wheels should turn. (If only one turns, don't be alarmed. One wheel sometimes has more resistance in the brakes, bearings, or CV joints. This is normal)
Step 3) Start the vehicle and let it idle in PARK. Engage 4high. DO NOT PUT THE VEHICLE IN GEAR!!! Crawl underneath and see if you can turn the front driveshaft.
**If you can turn the front driveshaft, the transfer case is not locking. The shift motor could be falsely reading an incorrect t-case position, or it could be a mechanical issue with the case itself. Start a new thread with the results of your checks, and we'll go from there.
**If the front driveshaft does not turn, the transfer case is locking properly and we need to continue searching.
Step 4) With the front wheels in the air, engine idling in PARK, spin one front wheel. The other wheel should spin the opposite direction. If it does, the system should be properly engaged. Safely lower the vehicle to the ground and take it for a test drive. If the wheels do NOT spin in opposite directions, there is a problem with the front differential or axle. Start a new thread with the results of your checks, and we'll go from there.

My 2001 cavalier makes aconstant humming noise. When I turn to the right it goes away. I am thinking it is the wheel bearing in the front right. Has anybody else noticed something similar?


Correct diagnosis, but make sure it isn't the left bearing. Jack the car up and check both wheels for play. If no play, start and put in drive (while still jacked up off both wheels), and listen to each side for the noise.

I have a 95 dodge 3500 4x4 service truck when u put it in 4wheel drive it seems like something binds and then pops and then it will roll again im thinking maybe the pinion bearing because i replaced both u...


lift front axle and place on jack stands. place front axle on 4x4 and rotate wheels by hand. If front axles are harder to turn than normal then remove drive shaft from transfer case and rotate front axle once more. this will let you know if the problem is in the front axle or in the tranfer case

What if your 4-wheel drive makes a clicking and whining noise


your truck most likely has a bad front axle. if you can get the truck up on jack stands (all four wheels off the ground.) and put it in gear you my be able to pinpoint wich axle it is/

Transmission is not working


This is normal, with both wheels off the ground the wheel with the least resistance will spin. Appling the brakes can change this.

humming noise come from wheel bearing normally when you go in straith line and you turn just abit on one sid or the other if the noise louder on one side thats a bearing thanks pierre
