Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

1 Answer

Starter??? My car does not start. I have tried jumping it and having the battery charge for hours. When I go to turn the ignition the interior lights work. I just get a click. Do you think it might be a starter problem? I have not driven or even started it for months (over the winter in the Midwest). If so, is that a project for a beginner car guy? Is it just a bolt on item? Thanks for the help!

Hi it does sound like the starter is stuck, there could be a way to free it and find out for sure if it is u/s, what you have to do is, locate starter on your vehicle, depending on its location you can try tapping it with a small hammer or a long bar of sorts, at the same time get someone to turn the ignition at the same time while you are tapping the starter, this should free the solenoid and then the starter should work, if it does, turn the motor off, and try again and see if it works if it does your ok, if not then try the above again, if you have to do it every time you turn the motor off then you will need to replace your starter....hope this helps please vote thanks

My interior lights turn on everything works its just my engine wont turn over it sounds like a clicking noise

Battery is weak or bad. The clicking noise is the starter solenoid and is a result of...not enough power in the battery.

It sounds like you probably have a shorted battery cell. This will not only cause the repeated clicking that you described, but it will also rob power when jump-starting from another vehicle. There is probably enough power when jump starting to turn the starter over, but after the starter take the power that it needs, there is not enough power to operate the computer system....so I have no doubt that you probably are not getting any fuel. The computer has to tell the fuel pump to run. If there is no power for the computer....I think you can figure it out from here.

Replace the battery and try it again.

Car won't start. clicks.

Try turning your car over with the interior lights on. If they dim way down, you have a weak or dead battery. You may be able to have it charged.

You can try a "jump start", but only if you are certain that you know what you are doing- if you have any doubt, have a friend who knows how help, or ask a mechanic. If not done properly, jump starting a car can not only be hazardous to both vehicles, but it can lead to serious personal injury.

Many of the risks associated with "jump starting" apply to charging a battery, so please apply the same cautions.

If after either a "jump start" or charging the battery get your car started, GREAT! You will need to follow through to make sure your battery is OK, though.....
- Take your car to a good service center and ask them to test your battery. They will connect a device that will stress test your battery to make sure it is holding a charge like it should. If it cannot pass the test, you need to replace your battery.

Finally.....
If the interior lights do NOT dim when you try to start your car, the problem is either the starter relay, the starter solenoid, or the starter itself.

I have power but when i turn the key there is nothing. is there a fuse able link? or could it just be my starter.

Most likely the battery is nearly dead. If there is not enough "juice" in the battery to engage the starter and enough to have lights. Try charging the battery for 24 hours and then try again. If this does not work then you may have to replace the battery. This could also be caused by a bad starter solenoid, a bad ignition switch. Do the lights go off when you turn the key to the start position? You could try to jump start the vehicle and take it to any of the large parts stores like Pep Boys, O'Reillys, or Autozone. They can read the codes from the computer, test the battery, starter and charging system. They generally do this for free...

try car to car boost-battery charger may not be working correctly or set on low amp charge -interior lights and dash may all light but battery may not be strong enough to energize starter have battery tested if battery good than check for power to the starter if power-- starter may be shot can remove also and have tested at most auto stores free if no power battery -wiring-or connection issue would need to test fuse panel-ignition switch and starter solenoid

Most partstores will test battery altenator and starter for free. Either your battery is dead or your connections are not metal to metal contact, or you starter relay may be shot. You can put key in on position and either test with a voltmeter or use a screwdriver and jump terminals on solenoid to see if starter turns.
