With a med-lrg crescent wrench, you will swing the belt-tensioner pulley just enough to lift the belt free...the tensioner is located near the top-left on the front of the engine, and is a simple pulley with a wrench block on it's arm...there is a large and heavy spring mounted to the arm, so a helper to lift the belt will make it easier.

ADJUSTMENT

Excessive belt tension will cause damage to the alternator and water pump pulley bearings, while, on the other hand, loose belt tension will produce slip and premature wear on the belt. Therefore, be sure to adjust the belt tension to the proper level.
To adjust the tension on a drive belt, loosen the adjusting bolt or fixing bolt locknut on the alternator, alternator bracket or tension pulley. Then move the alternator or turn the adjusting bolt to adjust belt tension. Once the desired value is reached, secure the bolt or locknut and recheck tension.


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.4L Engines

  1. Loosen the alternator support nut.
  2. Loosen the adjuster lock bolt.
  3. Rotate the adjuster bolt counter clockwise to release the tension on the belt.
  4. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the pulleys.
  2. Rotate the adjuster bolt clockwise until the proper tension is reached.
  3. Tighten the adjuster lock bolt and the alternator support nut.

  1. Remove the alternator belt as described above.
  2. Loosen the power steering pump adjusting bolts.
  3. Remove the power steering pump fixed bolt on the rear of the bracket.
  4. Rotate the pump toward the engine and remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the pulleys.
  2. Rotate the pump until the proper tension is reached.
  3. Tighten the adjusting bolts on the pump.
  4. Tighten the fixed bolt on the rear of the bracket.
  5. Install the alternator belt.

A/C COMPRESSOR BELT
  1. Loosen the tension pulley and remove the belt.
  2. The installation is the reverse of the removal.

ALTERNATOR AND A/C COMPRESSOR

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the front undercover.
  2. Loosen the tension pulley fixing nut and relieve the tension on the belt by turning the adjusting bolt.
  3. Remove the belt.

To install:
  1. Install the belt on the crankshaft and alternator pulleys.
  2. Using the adjusting bolt on the tensioner, tighten the belt to the desired tension.
  3. Tighten the fixing nut to hold the adjustment.
  4. Install the undercover and lower the vehicle to the floor.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.

POWER STEERING BELT
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


CAUTION Wait at least 90 seconds after the negative battery cable is disconnected to prevent possible deployment of the air bag.
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the undercover.
  2. Remove the alternator and A/C compressor belt.
  3. Lower the vehicle and remove the cruise control pump link assembly.
  4. Place the power steering hose under the oil reservoir.
  5. Loosen the tension pulley fixing bolts and remove the power steering pump drive belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump drive belt.
  2. Insert an extension bar or equivalent into the opening at the end of the tension pulley bracket and pivot the pulley to apply tension to the belt.
  3. Tighten the fixing bolts.
  4. Raise the vehicle and install the alternator and A/C compressor belt.
  5. Install the undercover and lower the vehicle.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.

3.0L SOHC Diamante
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the lockbolt on the face of the A/C tensioner pulley.
  3. Turn the adjusting bolt of the A/C tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the A/C belt.
  4. Remove the A/C compressor belt.
  5. Loosen the locknut on the face of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley.
  6. Turn the adjusting bolt of the tensioner pulley to loosen the tension of the belt.
  7. Remove the power steering/alternator belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering/alternator belt first and then the A/C compressor drive belt.
  2. Adjust the belts to the proper tension by turning the adjusting bolts and tighten pulley fixing nut/bolt.
  3. Tighten the mounting nut of the power steering/alternator tensioner pulley to 36 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).

Need to change alternator


loosen tensioner bolt, but do not remove bolt. tensioner will drop down enough to get your belt back on. then lift tensioner back into position it was, re-tighten bolt. belt rides over top of of tensioner smooth pulley, note , sometimes the tensioner wears out and needs replaced, go to rockauto .com for best price. also, have the alternator bolts loosened when putting belt back on , this will help , but remember to re-tighten them after belt is on.

Alternator belt diagram for isuzu bighorn


All above is Bull Sxxxt. Isuzu bighorn Alternator belt only drives water pump (fan) and alternator. Size of belt is 17x1000 and its a tight fit onto pulleys so it makes you think its wrong belt, but trust me its not. As if you get 17x1025 or 17x1050 belt you wont get it tight correctly due to not enough adustment on alternator. To change/adjust the belt very simple. Loosen 3 bolts (14mm socket) on power steering pump (its 2 belts that diving power steering and air con), loosen tensioner on p/s pump. Remove those 2 belt - to get access to alternator belt adjustment bolts. There are 2 bolts you will need to loosen One at the bottom of alternator (14mm socket and 25mm extension bar to get it easier) another one is 12mm on tensioner rail. Than adjust tension by screwing 12mm long bolt that mounted across the tensioner rail until you get tension correct. Correct tension is about 68kg. But i do it just to get it nicely tight without too much of sag. REMEMBER DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the belt as you will crush berings on water pump or alternator.

I am trying to hange the serpentine belt on my 09 lancer rallyart and it keeps slipping off


Locate the two belts on the left side (passenger side) of your Mitsubishi Lancer. The outer belt is a serpentine belt, operating four pulleys and the inner belt is your alternator belt.

  • 2 Follow the serpentine (outer) belt to the three pulleys lined up vertically near the front of the engine compartment. Locate the middle pulley, which is the tension pulley for the belt.
  • 3 Loosen the bolt on the middle pulley with a socket wrench by turning counter-clockwise. Do not remove the bolt, just turn it a couple of times. Loosen the tensioner bolt on the side of the of the pulley, facing the front of the vehicle.
  • 4 Remove the serpentine belt and then loosen the bolt on the alternator. With the alternator loose, move it forward so that the alternator belt loosens up and then remove belt from the pulleys.
  • 5 Install the new alternator belt by placing it over both inside pulleys. Tighten the tension on the alternator belt by moving the alternator back and keeping tension on it by holding it back with a long screwdriver. While the alternator belt is tight, use a socket wrench to tighten up the bolt on the alternator.
  • 6 Place the serpentine belt back on the pulleys and then use a socket wrench on the bolt on the front of the tension pulley. Once the serpentine belt is tight, tighten up the bolt in the middle of the tension pulley.
  • 7 Start the Mitsubishi Lancer's engine to test the alternator belt and make sure it is working properly. Once you have verified it is working, turn the engine off.

    There are 3 belts on the truck. The belt that goes around the alternator is not spinning. What could cause this belt not to turn?


    Assuming that the belt is not broken ... you need to tighten the belt. This one is not as easy as the other two which have tensioners. This belt is tensioned by the alternator itself. I've found adjusting it to not be a lot of fun ... the tricky part is loosening the bolt that the alternator pivots on. There isn't a lot of room and I find one of the small palm ratchets to be helpful. So to tighten, you'd loosen the upper bolt that actually holds the tension on the belt, loosen the bolt that the alternator pivots on, re-tension the belt (using something to pry on the alternator if necessary) and tighten the two bolts again. If you have to replace the belt you'll need to remove the outer two to get to this one. The outer two tensioners are adjusted by loosening the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley in place and then turning the tensioner bolt itself to tighten or loosen the belt(s)... then retighten the bolt holding the pulley.

    HOW TO INSTALL ALTERNATOR BELT DIAGRAM

    On most of the 1981-88 model year engines covered in this information, the alternator/water pump drive belt is tensioned by a screw type tensioner, which makes precise tension adjustment easy.

    1. On 1981-87 models, loosen the locknut, located on the locking screw or lockbolt-located in a slotted portion of the outboard alternator mounting bracket.
    2. On 1988 models, loosen the T-bolt, located in the center of the disc shaped portion of the outboard alternator bracket.
    3. Tighten or loosen the drive belt tensioning bolt. This bolt is tightened to increase belt tension and loosened to decrease it.
    4. When the belt tension is correct, tighten the lockbolt.

    I don't have the figure for your car, but the below figure shows how to remove the A/C belt.
    the other belts should have a simple slot in the bracket for adjusting. If you have more questions, let us know.

    What do I loosen to get 1st belt off so I can change ac belt?


    Assuming you're talking about the 22re ... there are tensioners on both the power steering (first) and the a/c belts. Loosen the bolt on the pulley and then the bolt on the side of the tensioner tightens and loosens the belt. You might want to check the inner ... alternator / water pump belt while you're there. No tensioner for this one, you need to loosen the bolt that the alternator pivots on, loosen the bolt on top of the alternator that holds it in place on that bracket and then pry alternator and tighten bolts to hold the tension.

    Replacing drive belt for Kia Sorento


    You have three belts on your sorento
    one for the A/C
    one for power steering
    And one for the alternator

    to remover the power steering and alternator you need to loosen the tensioner center nut, then loosen the tensioner adjuster bolt. its easier to explain with a diagram.
    to remover the alternator belt, you have to do that from under the car, which means removing the lower engine cover. the same methods applies to the alternator belt, loosen the tension centre nut, then loosen the adjuster bolt.

    by they way, sorentos with the new 3.8 engine have only one belt, thats 2007 and up.
