Question about 1998 Buick LeSabre

3 Answers

I have a 1998 Buick Lasabre with the 3.8 engine it has 196,000 miles on it, fual pump has never been replaced. the car feels a bit shaky sometimes it sputters at take off, and sometimes it dies when you are taking off from a complete stop. I got a P0420 code, it has new 02 sensors, muffler, plugs and wires. I am thinking it is the fuel pump going bad. during this week the car was doing ok no shut of but still a bit shaky while the tank was a 1/4 filled, then when I filled the car up this morning it started to die at take off from a complete stop.

I just replaced the converter yesterday morning it felt like it had more power, the P0420 has not come back on yet as it does not take long to do so before I replaced the converter, the evap system and H02 sensor is still showing not ready, so I am hoping it did the fix, as the old converter was an after market that was under sized I got the right one to replace it, a walker OBD II converter, I will let you know the results when the evap and the H02 sensor shows ready.

Your PO-420 Code may be a failed converter, and the reason you fail inspection.

I wouldn't replace the fuel pump.
Put the pressure gauge hose on the fuel rail and tape the gauge to the windshield, and go for a ride.

Sounds like your converter is blocked up inside

If you got codes for the Evap System, work on them,as their usually vacuum leaks, which will lean out your O2 Readings, and set those codes. Stay with it,you'll get all your issues fixed

Have you replace the fuel filter sit under the car close to the gas tank, part #481 also there's a valve under the hood on top of the engine on the fuel injector rail to check fuel pressure, you will need a fuel pressure gauge, I would check that 1st before replacing fuel pump, good luck, hope this was very helpful.

fuel filter has been replaced, fuel pressure is 45psi when pressurized and 41psi with the car running, I get 1 1/4 liter of gas per minute.

Start with the fuel filter... about $15 at the parts store
then check fuel pressure
ideal should be 35+ with engine running
less than that after replacing the fuel pump = failing pump!

Testimonial: "he did solve one of my problems, but he kind of disappeared on me left me waiting a couple days for a reply, I still have not gotten my reply so I closed the case and decided I can get it done a lot faster on my own instead of waiting by my computer checking my email for an answer, I know these guys are busy with other things more impotent, and it would be wrong for me to get mad at them for not getting back to me soon. thx for trying. 1998 buick lasabre changed plugs and wires when hit gas cuts in and out

I would try changing the fuel filter and/or pump. My brother had to take the exhaust system off the bottom of the car and then pull the gas tank to get to the fuel filter.

Hope this helps.

My problem was after I would drive the car and the engine would heat up. Once I parked and then tried to start it again while engine was still warm, it would not start. Strangely enough, a jump would solve the problem. But it happened over and over. Once we changed the fuel pump and filter, it never happened again. If you are under there replacing the fuel filter, I recommend changing the fuel pump as well. No sense in having to go through that awful hassle twice.

Have you checked the timing it sounds like the timing is off, did you prime the oil pump before you installed it.

depends on they type of driving you do and how heavy your foot is, but you should expect about 15-17 mpg city and 20-23 highway if it is in good running condition.

1998 Buick LaSabre LTd. 18,000 miles (no kidding). Engine light came on. Replaced gas cap & engine light stayed off for about a week. Engine light back on. Any suggestions?

Stop at Auto Zone or advance Auto and ask them to read the codes for you. That will give you a better idea of where to start.

I have a 1998 Buick LaSabre with 80,000 original miles. Has always been maintenanced. Problem: At a stop light, died. Had it towed home. Engine is locked up! How could this have happened???

oil pump couild've failed, allowing no oil pressure,or bearing could've spun and threw a rod bearing, usually when this happens there is some fair warnings, like oil light/gauge droping pressure or a loud knocking noise.if you didn't experience any of these I would like to know also.

Diagram for 1998 buick lasabre serpentine belt

I found the diagram in my owner's manual.
I replaced the belt on mine just 2 days ago. All you need to do is remove one bolt from the lower motor mount and remove the spacer. After you relieve the belt tensioner, the belt will slip right through the gap. Don't forget to support the engine before removing the bolt. As a backup I took a photo of the belt with my digital camera beforehand... just in case.
