Speedometers can have up to a 10% error straight out of the factory floor.
But. if you have changed the tyre size up or down from the standard size, or the gearbox ratios or even changed the drive differentials, any of these can increase the errors of the mileage shown on your odometer or trip meter.
If you haven't changed anything, take the truck back to the dealer for a check. Try a Jeep Grand Cherokee user group on the internet to see if its a common problem. Also, post a question on their user group forum.

What causes speed odimeter to quit working all at once

If the speedometer and odometer stop working, it could be the speed sensor in the transmission.
If only one component stops working, the problem may be in the speedo cluster on the dash.

Digitial dash will not work wnet black and then smoke came from unit

sorry mate, had the same issue 2 months ago.
i totally dismantled the the instrument cluster and found 2 trasnsistors totally burnt.
the transistors are propritary to chrysler and can not be replaced.
you will have to source a new instrument cluster.
as a foot note, the milage on the car is stored in the cluster so the replacement cluster will change the milage reading for the car. with any luck the wreck it will come from will have a lower odometer reading.
have a nice day

The odometer/milage counter stopped working.

You need to replace the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. Located on LH, lefthand rear of transmission.
